I removed each spring in turn and established that no one spring was causing the problem. I also tried the tissue paper method and this didn't work. From a low angle you can see that the springs are all kinking at quite a significant angle so I'm not surpised that the paper didn't work.
I like a bit of pull back with the block size that came from the factory so I suppose I'll either have to file three grooves in the wood or put up with the creaking.
