Well Shreddy, I do disagree there. As I said earlier, there were guys that felt bad about the situation because no matter how it happened, a broken neck on a guitar sucks.
But I feel a lot of these guys could care less and only care about defending the sacred cow. Those are the people I don't give a shit about.

Neck pockets get cracks for a few reasons. It all boils down to it being a stress crack. The stress can come from the neck fitting too tightly into the neck pocket, from shock due to dropping the guitar, or changing the neck angle with too much force (with the neck screws loosened) or due to swelling from moisture/humidity.
I've seen brand-new guitars with them; expensive ones. As long as it's a finish crack (which 99.99% of the time, they are) I really don't care about this.
Anyway, you know, Ed, I guess there have been a couple of guys who outright said you "lied" and you broke the guitar, or that you must have broken it and "didn't notice" or whatever.
I'm not one of those guys, but I absolutely don't believe that "just happened." I don't think you do, either, for that matter.
So, if you read all the replies in this thread that say "no fucking way that 'just happened'" with that in mind, you'll see that the majority of the people seem to just be saying that, there is no fucking way this "just happened" - that guitar took a hit, before you bought it, after you bought it, it makes no difference, that guitar got smacked hard.
And, there is also a good possibility that this isn't Charvel's fault. A really good possibility. That doesn't mean it's YOUR fault, it could be UPS, could be some guy who works at the store, could be some guy who tried the guitar out before you bought it... Whatever.
And they did offer you a pretty good deal on a replacement neck, even though, there's almost no possibility that there was any problem at all with the guitar when it left Charvel's hands.
So I guess what I'm saying is, I don't really get why you are pissed at FMIC/Charvel or why you didn't go for the new neck, but I do understand why you're ready to just put the whole thing behind you. :dunno:

If I broke the guitar or knew how it broke, I would say it. There's no reason not too. But I will not say I did something I didn't do, and I will not take a "great deal" on a new neck out of principle. Agree or disagree it doesn't matter. That's what I believe in.
As far as FMIC, before I was a cop I was in the car business a long time, mostly as a service manager. So I had many cases of repairs that did not appear to be a defect, but I took care of them under warranty to show some good will to a customer in a very competitive market. I didn't charge them "dealer cost". I took care of it. If I had been shown that same level of consideration, FMIC would have earned a customer for life. Instead, they alienated one. Again whether you agree or disagree, this is my position and I am firm on it.
Things seemed to have calmed down a little around here. I'm sure someone will come along to piss me off soon enough.Last edited by biged71; 01-26-2010, 10:03 PM.

Not that it matters, but from the pic posted, I HIGHLY doubt that the crack had anything to do with sinking a screw about 2 inches away from where the crack starts. This break has nothing to do with the addition of an allen wrench holder.
That said, if the guitar was fixed (for free, by someone who knows what he's doing), why sell it?

Even as a collector I'm running out of room, and I just bought 4 more. I've been on an amp kick too, and I don't even play out anymore. I've got to stop this madness!! Also, this one really just is kind of heartbeaking and maddening at the same time. I'm never going to play it, so I might as well let someone else enjoy it.

Yeah worked for Skynyrd right? Its funny you say that actually. Obviously I hadn't played the guitar much previously, but after the repair when I put the neck back on and strung it up, I couldn't believe how resonant the guitar was. Even more so than I remembered. I handpicked this one from a choice of 4 different ones and I felt then and I still do, this was a really good one. Same with the white socal I just picked up.

edit- hope i'm not the one to come along and piss you off. i accept your decision to not buy any new fmic guitars as like your said its your $$$. i'm just giving my 2 cents in a semi serious, semi jokin manner.Last edited by jdr94; 01-26-2010, 11:20 PM.

The bigger point to me was the idea Big Ed is thinking that the guitar was fine when he put it in a gig bag on top of other guitars in hard cases, locked his studio door, and came back months later to find it cracked like that. I have to believe that either it was NOT fine when he put it away, but he didn't notice that; or that something DID happen to it in that room, which he does not seem to admit the possibility of.
He seems to believe that a crack simply appeared an spread in that neck with no apparent cause, well after it was made and shipped to the store where he played it, along with others, picked that one out because it was the one he liked best, and apparently took it home and stowed it, and it was fine all that time, but sitting in an undisturbed gig bag caused it to crack due to some kind of timebomb manufacturing defect.
He wants to hold onto this belief despite the fact that everybody who has a working understanding of these things has told him that what he believes happened could not have happened.
I'll admit that I piped in and got crappy about it - after seeing that he had already made up his mind, seeing him start to get shitty with others, and seing him disregard Mike Learn's advice that what he thought really couldn't happen, offer to fix it for him, and advise him to snap up the $200 neck.
Of course, Sully, you know that I rarely get snippy :ROTF: but I couldn't resist when I perceived him telling the whole board to fuck off, when they were, at first pretty gently, trying to tell him he was wrong in his belief.
He's making homoerotic overtures to underage kids, I mean that's pretty far to go when a kid says "Hey, I'm only 17 and even I can see you're being a dick".
Sometimes you have to step off from your pride and take a look at yourself. We all like to be right, but we are all wrong sometimes.
Even me, once or twice in my life, anyway...Ron is the MAN!!!!
