i will admit i'm a sucker for unique wood grain and to some extent will pay a reasonable premium over regular solid color paint. Wood is kinda cool in that its a living thing (or at least, *Was* a living thing) and no two pieces are identical. I generally find the really quilty pieces a bit gaudy but with the right stain/finish they can be extraordinary. I tend to gravitate towards flame maple or other unusual figured woods.
Nice figured wood is becoming harder and harder to find in sizes suitable for guitars, unless you consider veneers.
here's a pic of one of my guitars - its a burled olive wood veneer on this. reminds me of coffee as you stir in creamer. Two of my fav things: coffee and guitar!
