I recently purchased a new taxi cab yellow SD1. I noticed that it doesn't sustain that well when I play leads, at least not as well as my old model 3. I had a local luthier do the setup on it and he said the bridge pickup was cutting out and that the toggle switch is cheap. He re-soder the connections but said don't be surprised if it goes out. I used it at practice last night and it just didn't seemd to sustain very well for leads and I couldn't get harmonics to jump out very well. I don't have this problem with my model 3 and that has a JB in it also. It felt like I was playing with the volume rolled back some. I don't remember this being a problem when I tried the guitar out before I bought it. I was wondering if I should get a better switch or is the lack of sustain because of the Korean made Floyd, or both? Should I get an OFR? I've read on here other people installing an OFR and saying it improved the sound and sustain. Any susgestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sustain problem with SD1

I don't think the switch was low quality at all. Sounds like your "luthier" was trying to sell you something.
FWIW - I replaced the MIK Floyd on mine with a German Floyd. No difference in sustain, IMO. Maybe a little brighter, but only just a little.-------------------------

The luthier wasn't trying to sell me anything. He's very well respected around here and has been building string instruments for a very long time.
The strings are not fretting out and the pickups seem to be pretty close to the strings. About the same as my model 3.
May be I'll have him check out all the electronics in it. I thought this guitar would just kill my model 3.
Recently I had a breakin and all my guitars were stolen. The only thing I got back was the model 3. I really want the SD1 to become my new main guitar.
Thanks for the help.

When I bought my first So Cal, it was my first all maple neck and it seemed like the sustain was ok but not as good as my other guitars which mostly have fingerboards made of rosewood or ebony.
Of course that could just be a coincidence and there are many factors that affect sustain. In search of better sustain, I bought a brass big block for the Floyd and it made a big difference for me.Dave

FWIW - I recently exchanged a Yellow SD1 because of the same problem. It just sounded dull and lifeless compared to other pro mods I have played. I had them send me another one and all is good now. It was just as you described, it sounded as though the volume knob was not maxed out.

The size should be marked on your current block.
And yeah, I'd say bad pickup, or bad pot.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
