I think Grover Jackson sued Wayne Charvel so Charvel can't use the Jackson headstock anymore and now they use the Fender headstock - but don't tell Leo or he'll slap a cease and deceased on them!

Warmoth leases the headstock shape from Larry Dimarzio, who apparently holds the trademark.

You're talking about the pointy, right? Because I heard Michael Charvel has the rights to the strathead shape, which he inherited from his brother Wayne.

If so, he probably bought the rights from Gene Simmons...

Well Gene is involved, no doubt about that. When Gene allowed Jackson to make him his axe bass, they had to sign a legal document stating that Gene gets a percentage of all Jackson/Charvel sales and final say on any decisions. He's like a silent partner now.

Most of the pointy headstock models were actually ghostbuilt by ESP, and were called "Charvel by ESP" (and were made in the Scrachi Sushi factory). The non-ghostbuilt USA models are, naturally, marked "Charvel by Jackson/Charvel" (and are made in Fort Worth, TX).

Just to be clear, we should probably mention the Charvettes, which were hand made in San Dimas. I don't want people confusing those with the cheap imports made by ESP. (By the way, little known fact: there was a 6 month period where ESP workers went on strike due to lack of dental benefits in Japan, so Ibanez picked up the slack during those months; the only way to tell if you got one of these rarities is to take off the neck and look for a very small "I" stamped in the neck pocket)

SOOO cool. I was worried that I got ripped off when I traded a San Dimas Charvel and an Ontario Jackson for a Fort Worth Tx Charvette with a broken neck but it has the "i" in the neck pocket (I just checked) so naturally I am so stoked. Since the Ibanez made Charvettes made in the USA were rare, I'm going to totally refurb it. Money is no object here. Is there anywhere I can pickup a period correct Charvette Neck?

I might be able to help you here. It's rumored that Cosmo Kramer, founder and owner of Kramer guitars, had a large stash of NOS Charvette necks that were hand made in the San Dimas plant in Fort Worth. Story is that he leased a warehouse that Joe Jackson was using temporarily. When Cosmo moved into the warehouse, he discovered a case of unused necks in a back room. However, Kramer's neighbor Jerry apparently traded him some old shirts for the entire lot of necks. Now Jerry sells them on ebay every so often. Hope that helps.

I've heard that those shirts Jerry traded are now being faked by Ed Roman and sold as true pre-Fender made shirts in his warehouse.
