Another option, which I opted for, would be a humidifier. If you have a dedicated "music room" and can put up with the hassles of refilling the tank and the added electricity consumption, it's the way to go. Keeps everything on an even keel pretty much year round.

IMO this is not a good example of what to do... He's gone too far and beveled his fretboard edge along with the frets.

No kidding. I would not recommend what that page is doing. Getting a fret file would be a better idea.

Some folks like the feel of heavily "rolled" fretboard edges. Agreed that picture is more bevelled than rolled, but some folks might like it. (I don't, and that looks amateurish.)

I will say, though, that one of my Charvels was spec'd with heavily rolled f'board edges, and Charvel did an awesome job with it. A smooth arc to both the fret ends and f'board - it gives a real broken-in vibe to the guitar.

I now keep one of these Caliber hygrometers in the case with my soloist, after having the fret sprout issue...

I was watching that auction with interest, as its within driving distance for me. Glad I didn't have the money.

The seller said "dead mint", didn't he ?

                  what about neck bindings?

sharp fret edges? how does this apply to bound fingerboards. my ltd m-200fm has the fret wire poking through the binding in two spots. other than that there appears to be very little wear on the guitar in general. its not sharp but this is a used instrument so? is this just poor quality control? i know, one solution would be to buy another Jackson and ditch the ltd lol...
...I will secretly play a Les Paul when nobody is looking...

                  WTB really badly...Dean Custom 450 w emg's...

No, a little fret sprout is not a QC issue. Plenty of "mint" guitars will have it!

It's a product of the environment. Wood shrinks when it is dry. That is all! Hell, it could happen on the UPS truck on the way to you... It's cold as hell, and that means it's dry as hell, too.

But on that LTD, I'm curious what you mean by "poking through the binding" - do you mean the fret is just hanging over the binding a little? Or do you mean that the fret tang (the part that fits down inside the fingerboard wood) has actually broken through the binding?!?

If the tang is sticking through the binding, that would be really weird. Maybe a bad repair or something.

Yes, he did say dead mint. Aside from installing the Floyd wrench holder through the "Fender copyright" sticker, the guitar is pretty minty (and that's not only the color). Except for the fret issue. I would hate to have to take a file to the nicely rounded factory finished frets!

Good point. I would probably have to pay someone to re-shape the edges, once I decide I'm keeping the guitar and like the neck shape. I'm worried that it's much thinner than the neck I like on my blue SD-1. I planned on selling the blue one, but now I am not sure.

+1. Classic Fenders and Gibsons were rolled down this way.

You could probably swap the necks...

I tried that, but it seems my blue guitar's neck is slightly wider, and doesn't really sit in the green guitar's pocket very well. I didn't want to strip the screw holes or anything.

Funny...my "it's not a Jake" c/s Charvel has a fretboard that looks EXACTLY like the Jem that was posted. I actually like it, but what the hell do I know?
