  • CS/Pro Mod Mutt... Now, in red/black

I was pretty sure I'd end up doing this... Actually I had it in mind for a few months, finally got around to doing it.

This is one dirty little bitch.

Sorry it's so filthy but, I guess it's part of the charm of this guitar, so I wanted to show it off in it's typical state.

Using a neck from a Custom Shop Charvel and a Pro Mod body, plus various other Charvel and Jackson parts I had laying around from my stolen guitars (stuff I was "saving" in case I put them back to stock) I threw this together. It's kind of elegantly hideous, I think.

The missing piece was a set of neck screws. Charvel uses these weird oval-head #10 screws, I could not find them anywhere, and I wasn't willing to irreversably fuck up my neck using sheet metal screws instead (different thread) so I had to buy a neck plate that came with a set.

    So, it has:
    - Custom Shop Strat-head neck, maple, Tru Oiled, red headstock, binding & inlays
    - Black Schaller keys
    - Black OFR
    - Chrome knob (authentic Jackson part from an SL1 )
    - Chrome switch tip (black switch tip with black removed)
    - Chrome football jack plate (from SL2)
    - Chrome metal rings on black plastic rings
    - Red SH2N/SH5 pickups

Anyway, it doesn't have a scalloped lower horn or contoured heel or the other fancy stuff the Custom Shop body has, but it does have the angled neck pocket and non-recessed bridge, and the neck fits perfectly. I can put it back the way it was any time I want, but I don't think I will.

You are a sick, sick man. Seek help immediately!!!

Looks good, but I have to ask: why?

The red body is hanging around, I can easily put it back together. Actually, though, the neck fits better on the Pro Mod body than it does on the original guitar, and I really have no plans to do that.

As for why... Because I wanted the angled neck pocket/non-recessed tremolo. Just a different setup/feel. I really liked that white mutt that was stolen, and the only way to get it again was to do something like this, or actually ORDER a custom shop guitar, which would have cost as much or more than the Reno's Custom did anyway.

Here's the same body with a different neck on it, from about 6 months ago:

That neck ended up on the white body, and then it got stolen. Meanwhile, the black body has been sitting in the basement.

So, when I started buying replacements, I bought the white Reno's Custom to have a white Reno's Custom (that one is staying stock), and I bought the red one to put the neck on the black body. I probably would have done it immediately if I'd had a set of neck screws for a non-contoured heel.

The only thing not sitting right with me is the chrome rings. Black (or anodized red) rings would look better to me. I don't mind the chrome on the other stuff because thats controls/electronics so it seems right for them to be different.

I love that white neck. That's the coolest of the reno custom necks. The binding is pearl, right? If it was white... oh, man. That would be awsome on, say, a spare Adrian Smith body... mmmmmmmmmm

The chrome rings look a lot cooler in person... I tried it with just the black rings and I think the chrome looks better.

Red rings would be cool. Actually red/black zebra pickups would be cool, with red rings. I might do that... I tried to find a red knob, too.

Yeah, I can get red rings (I used white DiMarzio rings for the black/white and white/white mutts) but I can't find a knob so far.

Are you okay with either a strat style knob or a speed knob? I can pick one up for you this week...along with red rings if you want. Local shop here in Harrisburg carries thousands of pickups and Dimarzio accessories--I have to get some new pickups anyway.

I know the place you're talking about... That's where I saw the black/red zebra PU set.

He doesn't have any red speed knobs in his Ebay store at the moment.

Anyway, I'm looking for something for a solid shaft pot. I can get those Qparts ones with the inlay piece, so black with a red inlay, but I don't really like those.

For the moment it's put together and I kinda like it how it is, so I'm just going to noodle around with it for a while and see what I come up with.

I'd be more insulted if you'd said you like it. :ROTF:

                            *bump* with an update.

Yeah, so I did this... You were right.

Wiped some of the gunk off of it, too.

                              100% improvement right there!

Looks very cool... still not sold on the red headstock. Pickups, binding and dots all look good. Maybe if the Floyd was powder coated red it would match up better.

Dig that ebony board, though. Does it have a skunk stripe?
