I tried out some new production USA Charvels a while back.
I did like, but the necks werent as comfortable to me as the old Model series Charvels. IMO.
In their defense, they did need a string change and a good setup.Models
The prudes may snub them, but I don't care.
I dont need furniture.
If its tough, shreds, and screams, Its all good.
If it gets jacked, I'll get another one.
And rock that sucker.

IMO - the ProMod maple neck is one of the most comfortable necks I've ever played. Its got really soft rounded shoulders and that thin C profile. It feels small in the hand in comparison to the hard shouldered Model series necks and Jackson necks, and even my rosewood fretboard ProMod.-------------------------

And here's a look at the 2 original San Dimas's I still have now and two of my three USA Production models:
I guess I could say that I've played over a HUNDRED of each and it would be an accurate statement. I flip back and forth between them on a daily basis and when they are plugged into these amps in my studio,
I have to say that the Promods easily hold their own tone-wise with ANY of the originals I ever owned. The two original San Dimas's I still own are two of the three best sounding ones I ever had. The other best sounding one was the black strat head, very top right in that old photo. That's Rowan Robertson's Dio "Lock Up The Wolves" guitar and that thing sounded killer too.
The only way i would say that the Pro Mods do not feel like the old Charvels is that the old ones had the oil hand rubbed into the necks and I believe they were rubbed out or steel wooled once the oil had dried. These Pro Mods IMO love for their necks to be steel wooled (size #0000 only) and then played and played to get them to feel the way my 25-30 year old Charvel necks felt. I think they just spray the oil on on these necks and let it dry becdause they sometimes feel a little sticky or not as smooth as I prefer. Once they're steel wooled, you'd be hard pressed to tell a promod from an original if you were blindfolded and playing or blindfolded and listening. The neck shape on the Pro Mod is like they picked out the most popular and common size from about the '82-83 era. It's perfect IMO.
As for the model series necks? I don't care for any of them as much as any of the originals or any of the Pro Mods. Good guitars though.Last edited by Chubtone; 05-07-2010, 01:03 PM.

I don't have nearly the level of experience playing old school SDs as Chubtone but I will say that my 82' SD neck is almost identical to my pro mod. The pro mod is just newer and needs to be broken in more. I don't like to generalize because it gets me into trouble but I think they did a great job mimicking the feel and tone of original SDs on the pro mods.
