NGD: Flat Black Style 1C

No need for me to wonder how humbuckers are mounted without rings. A DR3 I ordered arrived today. It has metal rings but the height adjustment screw has been shortened and there is a nut holding it to the ring on the other side. The pups are black and creme and I have to agree a chrome ring needs chrome pup covers--nothing else seems to match.

Every once in a while the JB just works right with a guitar. It's never a bad pickup it's just not always awesome. Can we see a pic with the black pickup ring? I like the other hardware chrome just the chrome ring is kind of like an empty picture frame Maybe if you had a chrome or non-black pickup it wouldn't have been so jarring. I think if it was a trans finish the chrome ring would be fine or even a white body.

Yeah, I almost did a white Custom in it with the chrome ring, because I had one, but I was liking the JB, so I figured I'd hang with that for a while. I might do a reverse zebra in it...

Or maybe a red pickup like the Primer Scream 2H limited run. I dunno yet, but I'm liking it as it is now, it's a great player!

Slime Green So Cal's have experienced a delay on the production line as well as the rest of the flat black and candy tangerine ones. They are supposed to start shipping out any day now.

Did you knock the "this headstock is a blah blah blah of FMIC" sticker or whatever it is on the back of the headstock? Or is it painted there...either way, yours doesn't have it.

Now that you mention it, mine did not have one... I would have taken it off, if it did, but it didn't have one. :think:

It also came with an extra wrench holder (only one set of wrenches, and one screw, but a spare holder in the "parts bag") which is cool, because I like them and I need a few.

Yes. You might be able to find some tuners that would work without new holes. For me, since I've done it several times, it takes less time to fill them and drill new holes, than to find those tuners, though.

Or you can just stick with the Grovers, they're OK. I just hate the "kidney bean" tuners on a Strat-head.

Hello all,
I also bought one of these Charvel San Dimas single humbucker guitars, and have had it for almost 2 weeks now.
It was my first newly bought guitar since the late 80's, though I have picked up a couple of cheap secondhand guitars (60's re-badged Ibanez type) in the intervening years - but this guitar for me is a huge step up in playability.
The neck feels very flat and wide compared to what I was used to, but at the same time it plays faster and more accurately.
I'm new to Floyd Roses, I've found the posts on this site very useful for tips and links dealing with tuning.
Again thanks to your posts I got myself a Fender SKB hardcase which is a great fit, and have swapped out the vibrato arm and vol knob for black which I prefer. I have some Floyd upgrades coming - I don't really need them at my modest level of playing but it will be fun to do some modding.

Over the past few years I have come close to buying a new guitar on several occasions, all sorts of brands, styles and prices, but this one finally got me to commit. I'm used to single pickup guitars (previously neck pickup only) and felt comfortable with the aesthetics. Minimalist yet Floyd enabled seems a good description. I agree with other posts that the finish is far tougher than what I expected, it is not a mere primer coat.
I'm really enjoying playing it, I have no plans to buy any other guitars but if Charvel were ever to make an Explorer with vibrato (to replace my long-since-sold first guitar, an Epiphone by Gibson Explorer) I would be interested.

No, its just the way the guitars were made - neck pickup only. They were either neck only or neck and bridge on other models - it must have been a 60's thing.
I tracked them down on Ebay because I used to have one when I was younger, partly nostalgia, but they do sound nice for chords or fingerstyle (deep but narrow necks).
I'll be keeping them around as alternately tuned guitars, but the Charvel will be my main guitar now. Thats one thing with the Floyd Rose, I won't be able to change to an open tuning in a matter of seconds any more unless I grab another guitar. I'm looking forward to learning new styles of guitar though utilising the Floyd - one of the main reasons I bought it.
