  • swapping black hardware to chrome on socal

I have a charvel socal with OEM black floyd/tuners/etc. I eventually want to swap to chrome hardware. The floyd is easy enough swap but has anyone found a drop-in tuner that doesn't require plugging/drilling holes?

I believe the Jackson tuners are setup the same as Gotohs...I'm sure someone will correct me on this though.

The original tuners are Grover Mini Rotomatics, just buy a set of those in chrome.

        I'm plotting the same thing.

Someone here tried the Grover mini locking instead of Grover mini and posted his results here http://www.jcfonline.com/threads/104...locking-tuners

Stewmac has closeup photos of each. You can see the tab where the screw goes is a little different.

Now, which tuners with oval knobs ( instead of the Grover mushroom cap ) are an exact fit without alteration? That is the question.

I've done this with both of my So Cal's. I just went with Grover Mini Rotomatics in the color I wanted.

            And the answer is none.

I would SWEAR I have seen some Gotohs or Schallers with a tab that sticks straight down like the Grovers, but they were on a guitar. I'm not sure they would work, but they looked like they MIGHT work. :dunno:

But, it's not a big deal to drill them, unless you think you're not keeping the guitar, which, I'm definitely keeping mine this time.

the grover tabs dont go straight down, they are angled. i swapped the body hardware with chrome, left the neck black. i like the black hardware on maple, chrome & candy red cant argue wth that.

I suppose they have a slight angle to them, depending on how you look at it. But the point is, it's not as much as the Gotoh/Schaller 45-degree mounting tabs. The M-6 with the straight tab might be worth a shot, but I doubt they would fit. You're stuck with Grovers, or drilling.

Does anyone know if the Schaller M6 fits the Grover holes? Here are the specs: http://bit.ly/9iQJ7E

                        They do not.

More - the Gotoh and Schallers have a similar angle to the Grovers, but the Grover is smaller and the holes do not line up. Trust me.

I just installed Schallers on my ProMod and I had to drill.

@maltomario, dont worry about it, just swap the tuners to what you want and drill accordingly, a series of small holes in the headstock is nothing to worry about, otherwise if you dont want to do this just buy some chrome grovers as Mr JazzNoize mentioned earlier

I posted this a while back...you can try the grover mini rotomatics...but I can tell you now that they don't make a locking version that fits the pro mod charvels. I contacted Charvel directly, and ordered (only to return) from a number of online vendors. Every single time, the holes didn't match up with the ones on the stock charvel.

If anyone has found locking tuners that would fit, Please Please, let me know.
                            Thanks
