  • What PU's are in your Pro Mod

I know a the Pro Mods have been getting modded, I was just wondering what PU's and electronics you've put into yours?

    I've had the following setups...

Air Norton / PAF 36th Annv. in an SD1 - really liked this setup...moderate output p/u set
Air Zone / YJM in a So Cal - really like the Air Zone and YJM separately, but the YJM didn't cut it as a neck p/u in this guitar
AIr Norton / PAF Joe in a So Cal - like the Air Norton in the bridge, but hated the Joe
Evo 2 / Air Norton in an SD1 - didn't care for this set up...like the Evo2 more than the original, but I like the Air Norton in the bridge
Super D / Super 2 in a So Cal (current) - classic p/u set, but not doing anything for me in this guitar...I've just not had luck with So Cals!
Morse B / Morse N in an SD2 - very different p/u set...was cool, but not my cup of tea
AT-1 / Liquifire in an SD1 (current) - my favorite set up...I think this one is staying...for now!

Pagan Gold SoCal: Right now it's a Tone Zone (not the one that came in it, though) and two Rio Grande Muy Grandes in the neck and middle. (S/S/H) I had a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, I may change it back to that.

I mod'd my SoCal to H-S. Kept the Tone Zone in the bridge, now Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues in the neck.

I like the JB/'59 setup the best so far.

                In my:
                - SD1 I have a DiMarzio Super Distortion (this week - had an old Jackson J-80 in it for a year and may go back to it) and a Duncan 59 in the neck

                - Polar White So Cal has a Duncan '78 and an SSL-5 in the neck

                - Tangerine So Cal has a Mojave PAF in the bridge and Duncan 59 in the neck

My slime green San Dimas is stock.

My Ferrari red So-Cal has Duncans now, a Custom Custom bridge (thanks Chubtone!) and Pearly Gates neck, and they are both there to stay.

It's been a long time since I found a guitar that just sounded right out of the box. I've talked to a lot of guys who actually like the 59 in the bridge position...and I might be interested in hearing that....but otherwise, I couldn't be happier. I've always liked Duncan JB's anyway. I had a So Cal for exactly one week...with the Dimarzio...that sounded good...but not as good as the Duncan in my Telly...(I didn't like the color of my So Cal either...but that's a different story)...so I exchanged it within the 10 day exchange period for a San Dimas Strat, and I have no regrets. I actually dropped a JB Jr in the bridge position of my Fender American Strat, and it sounds pretty good too.

The big brass block from floydupgrades.com was a nice mod for anyone looking to enhance the stock sound...despite what some folks say, I played my San Dimas Strat with the brass block upgrade right next to my Telly (which I initially preferred the sound of stock), and it did make a subtle positive difference for the Strat. Nothing major...just a little tighter tone and sustain.

I will say this...I just got a Jackson PC1 and the floyd in that thing is the German made floyd (vs. the Korean Floyds in the Pro-Mods). I'm seriously considering just spending the 150 (each) or so for German made floyd for my two Charvels. I don't hate the Korean made units...but there is a difference...the German models are definitely a better quality.

Sorry if I went off on a tangent...I just feel compelled to share when people start talking about mods on these guitars. They're damn good stock....if you don't go overboard, you can mod these nicely...without degrading the already really cool sound of these things out of the box.

                    Just my opinion of course

Super Distortion/Humbucker From Hell in my So-Cal.

                      Killer!

May replace them with Bareknuckles eventually, but right now i'm lovin the vintage 80s vibe.

Worth noting the Super D is from 1974 (Installed in my 1979 strat before it was swapped for a bare knuckle holy diver)
                      I like EL34s.

I'vve kept modding my slimer SD1,
1st: Bought it used and came with MCP nukes. Nice for downtuning but that's not my style.
2: Suhr Aldrich/ SD Jazz combo. Loved the jazz but the Aldrich was too one dimensional for me. Great for AC/DC and Whitesnalke, but not my kind of PU.
3rd: My current setup. Super 3/ PAF pro, wired for coil splitting via a push/pull volume pot. I like both PU's, but the PAF Pro seems a little underpowered compared to the super 3, which nails both Dimarzio and duncan tones. In single coil mode, the Pups sound really sweet- especially when there's a little OD used.

Keep in mind while spending the $150 or so for a German Floyd that you are going to get back $90-100 for the Korean made one on ebay. It's a $60-70 dollar upgrade. Not a $150 one. And I know quite a few guys who play at a ridiculously high level that are going on two years with their stock trems and gigiing and recording records and not having any issues at all with them.

I have two german floyds, one one my Carvin and the "Pro" model on my Paradise USA. I really can't tell a difference in tuning stability between them and the Korean ones. I have a Gotoh on my SD2 and say that it is another upgrade you should look at. I got mine for $130 shipped its just as good if not better than the german ones. You could save a bit of money by ordering one.

I was saying the same thing a week and a half ago...problem was, I didn't have a guitar to compare the Korean Floyds to. I sold an old Kramer (with a German made Floyd) about a year ago...so I kept saying I can't really tell too much of a difference between the German and the Korean. Thing is, now that I have a German Floyd again (on the PC1)...it is a better trem...the arm is tighter and doesn't loosen up..the sound is a little clearer...I could go on. Bottom line is..I don't really have any complaints about the Korean floyds...hell..I've upgraded them with the brass blocks...I'm just saying there is a little bit of a difference...and now that I can feel/hear/see it, I may just spring for the better one. Of course, if I can sell a few other items I have laying around the house, I may be trading/selling my San Dimas Strat, and picking up a DiMartini model...I'm jonesin to get my hands on that snake skin guitar...and somehow I would have to imagine that it comes with a German Floyd
Just my opinion of course...and I'm certainly not saying the Korean models are useless...hardly...they're just....inferior.
