  • Pickup suggestions for a charvel?

Hey guys, so my san dimas finally came in...but I found out it has dimarzio evolutions in there...and although it's very tight sounding, it's not really my style. It seems to be a very unforgiving pickup. Those are pretty much the only pups I've tried in a charvel, so I was wondering what the "standards" are...I think it's the Dimarzio super distortion and JB?

Previously I was using a JB/custom hybrid pickup in my les pauls and I was digging the tight low end and clarity(you could hear each string when strumming a distorted chord). I'm looking for a more high gain pup, a bit more forgiving(I'm sloppy!) and just has that raunchiness...

    Any ideas?

unless it was changed, it should have Tonezone bridge & Evolution neck pickups. Around here, you'll find as many 'standard' pickups as you will bums on seats. The Custom & Custom Custom are very well regarded. Tonemonster will post his Larry The Cableguy pic spruiking the JB. I don't mind the JB, but it's not for every guitar.

I actually really like the Tonezone. It seems forgiving enough to make me sound pretty good and I'm sloppy as hell.
    Hail yesterday

Duncan Custom. Just because it's tighter than JB.

I think it was changed, as the pup covers are green, not black. Here's some pics.

Why not try a JB/Custom hybrid?

Thinking about it, just wasn't sure how it would be as the wood is different than a lp. Worst case I can take one out of my lp and try it...

Wow, lucky me! But you got the dtuna and tremstop, etc. I was going to get the classified one first, but didn't feel comfortable with the purchase, then the gc one came up...

I hear ya... The thing that stopped me from picking that one up was the green pickups... But when I got mine today it needed a setup and fret level.. So I guess it would have been a wash either way.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing, but it's starting to grow on me...but I think I'll still swap them out, moreso as I'm not feeling those evo pups...I'll probably get a setup as well, but out of the box, it seems to play pretty well. I did notice gc didn't detune the guitar, good thing the neck is quartersawn!

Here's what I tell everyone when they ask about pickups. Try adjusting your amp first then spend money on changing stuff. An amp will have way more to do with your tone then your pickups will. I don't like evolutions at all.
                      It's pronounced soops

I like the JB. SD and Dimarzio distortions are good, hot sounding pups, and I liked the Full Shred a lot too.

I think you're right. It would have originally had Seymours too. The other model, with the pickguard, it came stock with Dimarzios

The original pickups on that guitar would be a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and the Seymour Duncan Custom in the neck. That's what I have in my "Flame Up" ProMod and they both sound incredible through any high gain amp! IMO the JB is plenty hot and my favorite PUP of all time for any ballsy guitar like a Charvel with a Floyd or a Les Paul. (I do think the JB is a little bright for guitars with strat pickguards (since the PUP isn't mounted to the body).

Should have been a JB/59 combo. Do they make a neck version of the Custom?
