  • '05 Reissues?

    Hey guys, first post here!

How do the '05 pointy reissues compare to the current line of Pro Mods? Are there any differences outside of the headstock? I am in the market for a Charvel and as good as the new Pro Mods look, I would just wrather have a pointy headstock model. Also...how do the reissues compare to the originals as far as quality goes? For you guys that owned/have experience playing them, your input is appreciated! (and if you own them, pics never hurt anybody )

    Thanks guys!

I've got a few of these and, IMO, they are every bit as good as the Original Charvel Run back in the early 80's...fit & finish, necks & fretwork are excellent. They are a REAL bargain at anywhere around $1k. The necks are different than the pro-mods, again....more like the serialized pointys of the 80's. Here's 2 of mine.

Please explain. I've never had any of these. I do have a pair of MIJ ProMods a 1986 M4 and a 275 neck. Can you compare to those? Fatter? Thinner?

To me, the ProMod necks are slightly fuller than my M4 and 275 Necks.

The fretboard edges are not as 'rolled' as the pro-mods and the backshape is little thinner and has more taper along the length.

The neck will be closer to your Model 4 or 275, but oil-finished of course. Promods are a little thicker and have more of a C shape (as do most of the recent CS stratheads, with a few exceptions). The pointies tend to run thinner. I don't know if I'd call it a true D shape, but there is more of a flat spot feel to me. The specs on my favorite pointy ('05 JCF Dweezil run) are basically identical to a DK1 as far as thickness at the 3rd & 12th.

Promods are a great value, but I'd take the '05 pointy every time, partly due to a preference for that neck profile, but also because they were built to the same standard as a USA Select Jackson, by the same crew, using the same techniques and attention to detail, whereas promods were built on the Fender USA assembly line with the techniques and attention to detail that those get. There have been many long threads here about whether or not that matters, and each person has to make up their own mind. My personal opinion is that the whole point of C/J USA was to offer a higher-quality alternative to what was coming off of assembly lines. I know mass production has gotten way better since back then due to CNC, but the irony of a "USA Charvel" made on the Fender line still sticks in my craw. I think they play great and look nice, but I'll stick to my old-school stuff and buy more of the same on the used market as long as I can keep finding it at reasonable prices.

I'd say a D-shape is what my old '05 Star felt like. Very much like the Dave Mustaine KV "speed neck" profile... not too thin, and not too thick. From what I remember, someone from Jackson also stated they were very similar and pretty much the speed neck profile. My old '87 Charvel Model 6 and '88 Model 5A also felt similar.

Here are a couple of mine. The black one is a 2007 and the Bullseye is a 2003 CS Limited Run.

Nice guitar pics so far, I especially dig that bullseye!

I have noticed it's really hard to find these guitars though. I know there is a bullseye on the bay right now which I would totally go for if it had a maple board, other than that though I have never seen one of these for sale.

From what you guys are describing the reissues will probably have a similar neck to my model 1 that I have right now. That would be a good thing as it's my second favorite neck I own.

Model 1 necks are pretty thick as charvels go. the reissues are on the thin side.

TJ the neck on that star was dead on to my 86 pointy jackson necks. its got a little bit more chunk than a mod 1-4 neck not fatter just more boxy almost?...its hard to explain.

Really? Well, I dont like super thin Ibanez type necks very much...I always thought my Charvel was pretty thin! lol

Also can anybody validate or deny the validity of this website: http://charvelguitars.net/

If maple wasnt a requirement I have the red flame reissue 2 hum thats up on the bay, I would offer a jcf'er a substantial discount.

Yeah, kind of like a D shape but a little more boxy/chunky sounds right. I don't like real thin necks, and the Star was nice. The reissue 2010 Korean BC Rich Gunslinger I had also had a similar neck.

That's cool of you man, but I really just gotta have that maple board! I just love the look and feel of maple, and I am not sure I would really get what I want without one, ya know?

If I could just pick any, this one is pretty much perfect. I actually saw this picture somewhere on here first.

Here's the one I used to own, bought it from Matt's Music in '06. I didn't really care for the Duncan Custom 5 bridge pup and swapped it out for a DiMarzio Tone Zone that really brought it to life.
