Guthrie Switches To Charvel

Jackson /Charvel was for young metal fuckers. Guthrie, no matter of talent does NOT fit the traditional demographic of the Jackson legacy. IMO. He's also a gear whore. He jumps ship more than Mustaine/Lynch. No, he is NOT a good find. He's a fusion player at heart, and kids or metal players, such as myself give no shit about him or his music. He plays shred for the Weather Channel.

Guthrie is an amazing player, many who say he can play any style perfectly. That seems to be the case. Mostly I hear Alan Holdsworth when he's playing fusion. Not sure about the other styles he plays, but all I really see him do is freestyle shred or play cover tunes. But he doesn't seem to have a style of his own.

Really? Have you heard the CD "Erotic Cakes"? Incredible CD that he wrote all the music for - he has his own voice IMO...

I'd MUCH rather have the great established artists that Jackson lost, than to succumb to the likes of elevator, fusion that would bore my parents. The ONLY significant win for Jackson recently was Chris Broderick..he is worthy to sport and continue what put Jackson on the map in the first place. I'd rather take Alexi Laiho back than this technically advanced NOTHING..because he's not a blip on the radar to those that made this brand what it is. If Holdworth, Gambale, MacAlpine, Poland, Drover, Loomis, and countless others jumped ship..what makes any reasonable person think our demographic give a shit.

Putting someone such as Gus G would have been a genius move, because it brings in a new generation from a tradtional old school shredder. Jackson Charvel is soooooo out of touch for the last 10 year..it's ridiculous. The Mark Morton is cool, simply because he respresents what we were 25 years ago..instead of endorsing flavors of the month..Trivium. That says it all. But even that is passible because ..he's metal for kiddies.

You are just flat wrong. Guthrie does not play "elevator fusion". He plays some traditional jazz stuff that you may not like, but to dismiss everything he does like you are doing is ridiculous. Go listen to his CD if you want to find out what he is really capable of. or not...

I'm really surprised to learn that Guthrie is jumping from Suhr to Charvel. I would have never guessed that would even be a possibility. I think it's a great move for Charvel, even if he isn't a thrasher. I don't see it having a negative effect on the brand as he'll be attracting a lot of attention to it. If he does go with a signature model, which I'm sure he will; I wonder what it would go for?

I really like Guthrie, I was hooked once I heard "Waves". There's something about that opening lick that really grabs me. The whole songs is just killer. Waves and Slippery Wet Thing were my instant favorites off that record. Sevens was the sleeper that I really have come to appreciate. The man is super talented to say the least.

It's fair to say that there really aren't any young metal fuckers anymore.

It's actually not fair or correct to say that at all. It may be a little more "underground," but there are plenty of 20-something year old dudes playing real metal. The "old school" sound has made a big comeback in the past 5 years. Not this Periphery, djent or deathcore shit.

I'm 22 and the only reason I started playing guitar is because of 70's and 80's metal. If it wasn't for Randy Rhoad's I probably would have never thought much of Jackson. Randy Rhoad's, Warren DiMartini, Robbin Crosby, Rowan Roberston, etc, got me into Jackson guitars. So I still think young people would get into Jackson.

I've never heard of Guthrie, before now, so I don't think it's going hurt or help Charvel much. I think if Charvel got Gus G. onboard and made him a sig star, that would be bad ass.

I think getting Adrian Smith and Chris Broderick with Jackson helped a lot. When I saw that I was like, "Yes! Real guitarist use Jackson!".

But I don't agree with you about Guthrie. The man is amazing.

That said, I understand criticism of him in that some of his stuff is so very... mild and he does seem like a mish mash of lots of players.
