  • Charvel EVH Art Series, DeMartini and Custom Shop Comparison?

Hope this has not been run into the ground (I did try the search function) but has anyone compared the EVH to a DeMartini to a custom shop? I have an EVH bumble bee but a recent post on the blood drip Demartini has got me thinking about another 1H Charvel. I really like the EVH so my sick mind thinks I should look for a red/black/white. Common sense tells me to get something a little different. Love all the finishes in the WD line but I am curious about if the differences in the necks are a big deal? I am pretty use to playing different neck profiles and have no problems making the transitions unless the neck is a baseball bat. Where would a typical, somewhat recent, custom shop Charvel neck's profile fit between the EVH and WD?
For the ones fortunate to try all three, which one did you choose and why?
No honey, I have always had this Jackson....

How about someone who has tried two of the three...how do they compare?

They are very similar if not pretty much the same thing to me. If the necks are different, it's slight.

I wouldn't call the differences dramatic, but they're definitely noticable. The EVH necks have an asymetrical profile, while the "standard" Charvel strathead profile feels more of a flat D shape to my hand. The EVH also has a 1 & 5/8th nut vs 1 & 11/16ths, so you can wrap your hand around it easier for chords down low. IMHO, the biggest difference is in tone. Basswood body vs alder, and the unique EVH pickup.

        Both are cool, just different.

Can't comment on the WDs, as I haven't owned one.

I have been playing a USA Pro Mod and when I switched to the EVH, I did not think about the necks feeling any different. A WD or CS would probably be the same---not enough of a difference to matter to me.

You didn't notice a difference between a pro mod neck and an Evh? Wow that's kinda like the difference between a squire and a masterbuilt.

Ha-I guess so...but I do like Pro Mod necks. I have Jacksons, Charvels, Ibanez, ESPs and Kramers (80's stuff) and switch around a good bit so I don't get use to a certain neck profile. A recent resurrected thread had a picture of a '95 San Dimas III and it reminded me that I had not played mine in years. I pulled it out and I did notice a difference in the neck profile. It is a thicker neck, not bad but noticeable.
I am sure I will be fine with any Charvel neck profile but I am curious about the WD models- guess I kinda answered my own question.

I have pro mods, EVH and WD necks. They are all very similar to me. Not enough difference IMO to make me like one over the other.

Custom shop necks are not too far different from the USA Pro Mods. I mean, sure they're a higher quality, better hardware and fretwork, more attention to detail, etc. But, in my expierence, the profile and feel of the backshape of those necks is very similar. YOMV.

Thanks MikeStrat & shreddermon, that is exactly the response I was hoping for!

I need to search the forum about the WD pickup but I do have a question concerning the pickup. Will all WD Charvels have the WD pickup- assuming it has not been replaced? Did they come with this series from the start?

                    Thanks!

I find that interesting. Promod necks are 1 11/16 at the nut with a 12-16 radius. Evh are 1 5/8 and asymmetrical. My customs are 1 3/4 with a 11 in radius at the 12th fret like an original pre pro neck or like a fatter legacy neck. I can't even play a 1 5/8 nut string spacing is to close and the thickness and shape of an Evh neck I find noticably different than a pro mod or a WD. The pro mod and the WD are probably the closest. Then theres the zoo necks different still

Yes & Yes. Also, there is nothing special about the WD SD. I understand why most people replace them.

Have played all of em... Blood splatter... Bumble bee...red/ white with black pickguard... and the "Swords" ... All equal quality... if anything
that EVH you have is the fatter neck. If you decide to get one, buy one 2nd hand. Should be able to get a nice Splatter from a member for
around $1700.00 or less. Why buy new? Or wait a year?

Definitely would buy one used. I have seen some good deals but they only seem to come around when the guitar funds are low. Throughout the years I have always like the swords so that would probably be the one I would go with.
I have realized that neck profiles do not impact me that much, unless they are baseball bats.

I have DeMartini blood drip and an EVH r/w/b. Like Robert said, equal build quality. The WD has a thinner neck profile whereas the EVH neck is fuller. I wouldn't say it's fat, nowhere near a baseball bat. But there is a noticable difference between the two. The crossed swords is a great graphic and you shouldn't be dissapointed in picking one up. Good luck!
