Just realized the red and white one can't be routed the same way, as the red one was originally routed for 3 single coils, the white H-H makes sense but the red one would have to have a different route unless they filled in the middle pickup route anyone know for sure??

I watched the Russian interview video, he looked in terrible health there. So puffy and pale. I loved Bad For You Baby, it was probably my favorite album of his. Such amazing songs and variety of styles and tones, all killer. And with the fire and attitude Gary brought in his playing.

I love the Firebird action in this vid...

Good point! I forgot about that! It was probably Either H-S-H or a swimming pool route. I doubt very much they filled it, just stuck a new pickguard on it.

i would guess they probably just routed the bridge out for the bucker.. changing it to H-S-S.
but a H-S-H route would work just as well.... curious though were companies doing
Universal/swimming pool routes back then?.... i don't really remember when that became popular

I think so. But could be wrong. They either did or they didn't

                You're probably right, H-S-S.

I notice on the 1985 collection photo the white onne has a 21 fret neck without the pained headstock.. so that may be a different guitar or it was renecked early on for sure

The white Charvel was originally a double hum route with the Strat layout tone control area used for the active electronics, both the converted guitars have top loaded controls and the red one was originally a 3 single coil layout.
Both had the 'football' shaped side output jack originally.
The whole thing about the tone of the white/maple necked guitar is the double hum route which makes a tone chamber under the Strat pickguard.
Both of these guitars were delivered to Gary in 1984 from Charvel and p depicted in their original configurations in the group guitar pic of Gary.
Here are both the red and white Charvel Stratheads next to each other.
I have for quite a long time been searching to contact Keith Page the brilliant guitar tech who rebuilt these two Charvels to the single EMG configuration, it was a fantastic achievement. One would hope that the modern day Charvel outfit would see fit to reissue these great guitars. Since they never left the Charvel factory in the shape they ended up in Charvel could copy these easily and not be infringing on anyone's copyright or artists model

The white double hum prior to conversion, it having the black anodized R2 nut with otherwise chrome plated hardware and white painted headstock......

Both Strat heads turned out with 22 fret necks,,

It also had an earlier Floyd in the bottom picture. The neck was swapped on it atom point for sure or He had a second white one made. That 22nd fret didn't grow on the original My guess is there was a 2nd white one made

Recently the permanent grave marker for Gary Moore was placed. Not with sadness but great joy I and many others remember Gary for all the great guitar music he blessed us with.
                        Rest in peace my friend...

I allways thought it was an EMG85 just because (and this is not from someone that has ANY type of experience with EMG pickups) it has so much dinamic range of tones that I couldn't think the EMG81 could do! So I was hoping that the answer was that he didn't have an EMG81 there! Normally the sound I hear from a EMG81 is kind of a steril tone... but this is just a tone from HEAVEN! I specially when he lowers the vol knob and gets a lesser gain tone that still retains the full body sound, do you think he has a mod for this?

Any ideas what wood would you use on the body?

I have read in the past that Gary's red Charvel with the rosewood board in fact had the EMG 85 with the Gold lettering, it has a much cleaner tone than the white Charvel which definitely has an EMG 81 onboard.
At the famous 1987 Stockholm show Gary uses the red Charvel for the whole show less the Loner where he uses the white one.
I have seen bootlegs where he uses the white Charvel for the whole show with his Soloist as a guitar he switches to.
The 81 does clean up nicely though and the examples from the mid eighties and early nineties are great pickups.
I have EMG 81's in my Heritage Gary Moore signature guitar in both positions and it comports itself well in the neck position. Gary of course used a Heritage CM-150 built for him and that had a PJ Marx in the neck and an EMG 81 in the bridge.
