  • So Jake's featured in this month's GW. No word on the Charvie sig model. However, I noticed something funky in the pics of the guitar he's holding. The bridge has two different types of saddles on it. The lower three strings have the more vintage style "bent" saddles, and the three higher strings have the more modern Fender saddle design. Weird.

I read about that somewhere. He said that the the vintage style saddles have more definition and "pop", whereas the newer style saddle have a mellowing effect and tame some the harshness that you can get from the unwound strings...same theory as his reverse slanted single coils.

I've always thought the same thing about the single coils, wondered why nobody else did it that way (except the old Jackson Warriors).

I'm also surprised Jake isn't doing what he did with his ESP sig and having 1- 12 frets jumbo and then 13- 22 smaller.

Was that not the same on Whitey, albeit the opposite way around? The other way round makes sense as fretting the low notes hard, they don't go sharp without jumbos and jumbos are well lovely up top.

The issue is jumbo frets with a shorter scale. Jake's ESP was a Gibson scale (24 3/4") which made the frets too congested up high when using jumbos. Just play a Les Paul that's been refretted with jumbos and you'll see what I'm talking about.

            • Thanks for clearing that up. That makes sense. I was reading some mumbo jumbo about the original whitey Fender neck having been re-boarded with a different scale length board and fretted the way I said. See I find this hard to imagine as I look at the original and it looks like a 7.25" radius and has the bridge and nut in the normal place, maybe they refretted it with taller frets and added a slight compound radius but that would be about it to me it seems.

              • Yes, that's true about the ESP having the shorter scale, I forgot about that. DCGL actually still has a Custom Shop model in stock.

                • Jeez, I just saw the pricing from the TMZ website. The Jake seems especially expensive (compared to the Warren or even the Guthrie) given there's no fancy wood or graphic:

Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

Guy from Gojira. I've heard them before, but never bought any of their albums. Not sure if this is his sig model or not for the public, but it was posted on the Charvel FB page.

Here's an old thread talking about one of his custom Jacksons.

                      • Agree the pricing seems out of whack. That's a head-scratcher.

Can't disagree...there's simply nothing apparent that lends itself to driving the price up by over $1000 over a DeMartini

                          • OK, so apparently the pricing on the Jake was an error:

Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable

                            • Well, that's better! ...Although now it makes the GGs look more pricey in relation. LOL Then again, that guitar's got quite a few unique and spendy features.
