TJ I think those reissue necks pretty much nail the feel of the original pointys. I believe the speed neck is a similar profile but a hair thicker and not as wide.

+1. There's also more of a taper to the speed neck, starting rounder and then getting flatter as you go up to the higher frets. Like it starts out as a "flat C" and tapers to a "D" profile.
I have the measurements somewhere on my home PC. Trust me, the DK1 and Charvel pointyhead necks are very close in dimensions, and both consistently flat "D"s. And much more closer than the speed neck profile.Last edited by shreddermon; 09-12-2013, 01:04 PM.

I had an '85 original Pointy, and don't remember the radius being as flat as the reissues. And, I KNOW the ebony/rosewood boards were way thicker on the originals.'09 Charvel San Dimas USA

Found em! This info was gleaned directly from J/C sources and/or published in the catalogs...
Jackson Speed Neck
Neck Thickness at 3rd Fret: .775”
Neck Thickness at 12th Fret: .835”
Jackson DK1
Neck Thickness at 3rd Fret: .750”
Neck Thickness at 12th Fret: .810”
Charvel Pointyhead
Neck Thickness at 3rd Fret: .750”
Neck Thickness at 12th Fret: .810”
Despite the DK1 and Charvel Pointyhead having the same dimensions, I was told the two necks are very, very close, but not the exact same backshape. Both are flat "D" shapes. Supposedly the Charvel is a "flatter" D, or so I was told. Having owned both, I even went so far as to measure and compare them a few years back, myself. This just confirmed what I had been told / what was published. And there was little to no difference in feel. At least, as far as my untrained, sausage fingers could tell.Other than 24 vs. 22 frets and binding vs. not, they felt pretty much the same to me.
Speed necks are a different animal, though. The dimensions (above) are obviously different. The speed neck is slightly thicker, although still pretty "thin" by most accounts. (ex. Soloists are .790"/.850", and PC1s are even thicker still.) But, as mentioned, the backshape tapers from slightly rounder to flatter as you go up the neck to higher registers.
Anyway, enough guitar geekery. They're all damn cool to play, and feel great.

That's definitely a good score then bro!!! I would've jumped on that too. I just wanted to add that the Jackson Speed Neck profile is awesome. My favorite neck of all time. I even like it better than my Ibanez Super Wizard HP 5 piece maple walnut with KTS titanium rods as well and that's one hell of a nice neck shape. Awesome dimensions as well. Thickness measurements 17mm at the first fret and 19mm at the 12th fret. Width measurements 43mm at the nut and 58mm at the last fret. The overall radius is 430mm. I must say it's the nicest neck I've ever played with out a compound radius fret board as well. Super fast neck but the Speed Neck just feels better in my hands for some reason I can't explain.Last edited by leftykingv2; 09-13-2013, 01:05 AM.This is what I think of Gibson since 1993.I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED!
I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

Original SD Charevels were all over the place back in the day in terms ot neck profile. However, IMHO (and expirience) there were three styles of profiles the varied with nut width. Those reissues nailed one of the profiles.
Great score."I''ll say what I'm gonna say, cuz I'm going to Hell anyway!"

As an update, I was struggling with the trem floating 1mm off the body, then realized - screw it! I tightened the springs, and decked the Floyd. Now, it has more sustain, and acts like a Wolfgang/EBMM Axis, with dive only.'09 Charvel San Dimas USA

As another update, I had to re-shim the neck (there was already some cardboard in there - I removed it and used 3 business cards) to get it angled back enough so that I could raise the Floyd to float it properly (I hate having the Floyd tight against the body afterall). With the shim, the guitar plays much better, and the floating Floyd stays in tune better.'09 Charvel San Dimas USA
