  • How does the skunk stripe get on there?

    For some reason tonight, this question popped into my head and I realized that I have no idea how the stripe on the back of the neck is done. Are they routing a channel and putting some darker wood in there? Is it just a stain? Inquiring minds want to know :think:

    the first, a channel is routed for the truss rod which is then filled with another type of wood

      Done while the neck is still in "block" form prior to contouring.

        I always thought a skunk wiped their ass on the neck. :think:

          @Hellbat;
          This is what I think of Gibson since 1993. I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED! I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

              I think the skunk stripe is usually walnut and is inserted after the back of the neck is routed for it. Nothing to do with the truss rod since that channel is on the other side of the neck under the fretboard.

                Uhhmm...if so...then how would they install a truss-rod in a one pice maple neck??

                    Thanks, guys. That makes sense. I too thought the truss rod got inserted on the front of neck under the fretboard, but I realize that's not always the case.

                    I feel smarter today!

                      Only one piece necks "need" the skunk stripe as a way to fill in the routing for the truss rod. If it's done on a neck with a separate fretboard, I'd say it's for looks?

                        It is Walnut.

                              That looks like good work Uli, I enjoyed those photos. That video above is exactly what I had in mind when I wrote my first post. I assumed the skunk stripe was there just for looks. Where would the truss rod adjustment be for a one piece neck, at the heel?
