  • 2004 Caharvel San Dimas

I am hoping someone can help me here. I just bought this 2004 USA San Dimas, but I am questioning the body on the guitar. It looks aftermarket.

It appears correct with the shape, size and pickup/bridge. But there are no screw holes for both back plates (plates missing) and there is no writing in the neck pocket, nothing but a small cardboard shim?

Plus, under the neck plate the paint appears to have runs, plus the paint looks too new compared to the neck.

Serial number on the plate dates to 6/2004, Thank you!! "Sorry for the misspelling on the title!"

Looks like a parts mutt to me. Pro Mod neck and plate, aftermarket body. Not custom shop. And my recollection of the USA Pro Mod was those were done in late 2000s, so possibly not 2004, either.

Just looked it up in another thread. The first batch run of USA Pro Mod production guitars was 2008, so definitely not from 2004.

Thank you Shreddermon, I contacted Charvel support and based on the serial number they have it in their system as a C6120 and a San Dimas built 6/2004 (USA Standard series)

I see on ebay people selling aftermarket bodies, I am thinking you are correct and this is a mutt.

Not correct, I'm afraid. There is a difference between serial number 006120 (a Pro Mod production guitar, which your plate is from) and 6120 (a custom shop guitar serial number from 2004). The "CE" sticker is also a dead giveaway, would not be on a custom shop guitar.

Thank you for the information, I kick myself for buying this. The guy is now ignoring my texts. Do you think it's an aftermarket body?

This one looks a lot like mine, I have asked for pics of the back so I can see the plate.

This looks just like mine actually and is not a custom shop, they are listing it as a San Dimas as well. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Charvel/San-Dimas-Usa-Select-Fr-W-EVH-Pu-Solid-Body-Electric-Guitar.gc?cntry=us&source=4WWRWXGP&gclid=CjwKCAjwu 7LOBRBZEiwAQtfbGHZJ5xyp9BFEWC4cUuTzeFrqt59BhcgzygZ CYgz1NHJzCYqQ55Ti5hoC7n0QAvD_BwE&kwid=productads-adid^221116235902-device^c-plaid^358833329443-sku^113507124@ADL4GC-adType^PLA

Why are my posts disappearing or not showing up? Oh, must be because of the link I put in there! Ok, no worries I will wait for it to be reviewed.

Here is one that is a lot like mine at a Guitar Center, I have asked for pics of the back. They claim it's a San Dimas.

"San Dimas" is just Charvel marketing speak for the Strat body style. It's not a particular guitar model, per se. And it doesn't designate a guitar as from a particular series, either. There are "San Dimas" USA and import Pro Mods, USA Select production series, and custom shop guitars.

Sorry, but the guitar is not as it was described to you. It's a USA Pro Mod neck and plate, which were guitars made on the Fender production line. Neck and plate added to a body of unknown origin.

Definitely not a 2004 USA Standard Series - the serial number is wrong, and those were all pointy headstocks, anyway.

Really appreciate the time you have taken to explain this all to me. I am really new to the Charvel line and I should have researched a lot more before buying this guitar. The guy isn't being very cooperative about a refund either.

Depending on price, could be a decent find. Even for a parts mutt. Hope you didn't pay too much for it, though. Good luck.

Value is very subjective, especially for a parts mutt. Also hard to say from pics alone, not to mention that I don't swim in that end of the pool very often. But from what I can see and tell from here, it's reasonably in the ballpark. I'm assuming the body isn't some cheap POS (bad paint aside), that the trem is a real made-in-Germany Original Floyd Rose, and that looks to be some kind of a Dimarzio PU. And if the neck has no issues and were cleaned up, the parts alone would get you close if not more. Others here may have better insight on value, though.
