Number 96 (Chlorine) is coming this way....
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

I must admit that I had my eye on that one. Nice grab!

Well, that's it. I can hardly wait now.

I bought #13 that was hanging on ebay for ages. What the hell, it's only money. I was trying to find an original one... at any price... but no such luck.

It will be the first I've played a strathead charvel in nearly 20 years. The top will look good next to my Jimmy Page Les Paul. In fact, I've considered sending this off to RS guitars for a relic job.

I love jimmy page pauls, a friend and co poster Mike had his 25th floyded at the factory and it looks really cool.
I liked the guitar a lot. and Mickey, I'm far from the management, I'm a bum who incites riots on the board, and that 's all. All for the board that is.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

That's what happens when you resurrect a two year-old thread.

The guitar came today. Number 13.

I had hoped this guitar would have the neck specifications of the originals I owned back in 81/82. Sadly, it does not. It feels to me like the guitars that were produced with the narrower "floyd-friendly" neck specifications.

Is it a cool guitar? Yeah, it's okay. Very pretty. Silky finish on the neck. Cool NOS parts. Okay action, which I am sure could be tweaked. I haven't plugged it in, and as I won't be keeping it, I will shelve it until I sell or trade it.

So now I have to ask - is this the same width neck on all the current production Charvels?

no. as the 25th run progressed, the neck dimensions changed.

Well, I take it back. It is a VERY cool guitar. I setup the guitar, put on some d'addario nine guage strings, adjusted the trem, adjusted the intonation, and sat and played her.

I got over my disappointment over the neck. Anybody looking for an original pre-pro (which 25 years should be) feeling strat head charvel will probably feel the same as I did at first. They're simply not the same - not even close. The neck on this is a tiny little thing... and not the shape I expected, with a completely different feeling heel. It kinda reminds me of the eddie kind of necks he moved on to. In any case, it really took me by surprise. But it's good, when you adjust to it, and realize you have to forget about the old charvel thing, which this really isn't. It could use a good fret dressing though - which is a little disaoppointing too. You can feel the roughness when you bend the strings. I'll steel wool them tomorrow, for a start.

It's a cool guitar. Methinks I might keep it. Though I think I'll still end up getting the TITE with HRF & V-Trem (or maybe try to trade this for one along with cash, when I get access to the classifieds)

Tomorrow I'll plug her in and see how she sings. But for now my initial disappointment is over.

Mickey, your last two posts sum up in a nutshell what the overall reaction was to these guitars. Quite a few people just couldn't get over the neck being different, but over time the consensus has been that they are really nice guitars when judged on their own merits, especially now that the price has come down to a more realistic point. They were insanely high-priced at first, and I think that played into how negative some people's reactions were back then. I'm a little surprised that no one chimed in here or in your other thread to let you know not to expect the neck to be the same as the old ones, but this subject has kinda been beaten to death around here, and maybe they figured you'd read about it in one of the old threads. With regard to the newer stratheads, I haven't played one yet (still waiting on mine), but supposedly the specs & backshape are getting closer to what the production SD stratheads had. Be aware that they are using a compound radius fretboard on them, though. IIRC, the old ones had a regular 12" radius.

So the new custom shop ones are closer to the old specs, right?

I guess that means the three single coil hot rod flames strathead will have to happen for me!
