• Pricing (new charvels vs. old)

Hey Guys,

I am new to the board; old timer charvel guy.

Anyway, the new charvels look cool and very tempting. I am thinking about picking up one of the wild west guitars. I got a quote on the one with the vintage trem for ADMIN EDIT: DON'T POST DEALER PRICES HERE.

My question is:

Do you think that Fender will be able to sustain this business venture at the prices they are asking for these? As we all know, you can usually get an original (pointy) for the $1000 - $1600 range, and up to $2,000 for a really rare one.

As far as I can tell, the only thing that justifies their price is the fact that you can order a custom guitar now (wood, color, graphic, etc), however, when it comes down to it, I would think that most people would opt for an original when you are looking at comparable prices (in excess of $1500).

Thanks,

SCV {Stefan (Craig) Vaughn}

Welcome aboard
And that's a fair question, but then you have to ask:
-How many originals are still around AND for sale?
-What kind of shape are they in?
-What sort of mods have been done to them?
-Are the ones that are for sale even legit, or are they mutts, or are they fakes?

Obviously there's not enough originals around to feed the market, or else prices for the originals wouldn't be so high.

Another point to look at - the used USA Jackson market is down to roughly the cost of an average new Professional model ($400-700), so you could ask "why even have a USA Select line any more?"
However, this is not the case with SD Charvels. A lot of people have been clamoring for Jackson to re-release the Charvel line, but two things were always at the core of those calls: Stratheads and the original neck profiles.
They got the profile right (finally) but Stratheads on production models are not gonna happen anytime soon, no matter how much money is dropped on the table.
So, the Charvel fans have to settle for a compromise - USA pointy Charvels or no USA Charvels at all.

excellent post Craig and its great seeing you here!!! I think one of the draw backs for the general masses is that many of the originals had Kahlers or have been modified over the years. But agree the prices for new ones vs old is getting closed if you start adding on fancy graphic costs.

I for one am stoked to see Charvel pointies back (I always preferred pointies) and will be picking up a few new ones and got a few custom orders I wanta get started on.

The ideal situation would be people selling me their originals with Kahlers so they can buy a new one with a Floyd...but that is most like just me dreaming.

one further point...if the new ones play anything like the Bullseye Reissues that Guitar Xpress did, these new ones will give the old ones a run.

Well, comparing the 83 Star I just got to the Blue/Yellow Star at NAMM - the new ones are perfect.
And I agree about the price for new ones (especially the graphics options) - to order one like the NAMM Bullseye would be about $3000 (plus or minus depending on the dealer)

Re: Pricing (new charvels vs. old)

Good topic. I will echo some of the others, especially the availability issue. I had been searching for an original St@t head charvel for some time and came up with nothing (I either just missed them or they were backdoored off ebay etc.) I decided to be happy with GMW and now I am looking for a pointy (in my dreams - 2 hum Floyd with maple) and I have come up empty so far.

Once I turned my sights to the pointies, I found that others are following my lead. So it seems I have three options, hope I get real lucky, settle on whatever I can find or just buck up and order exactly what I want.

You know what, option No. 3 is looking better and better every day.
