      Others here know EVH/Charvel history way better than me, but I think when he bought the first body from Wayne, he wanted something heavy. The idea was to get LP tone out of a strat, and maybe he figured weight was key? I've never played a Northern ash guitar, but it's probably a matter of taste plus getting the right piece of wood, just like anything else. Anyway, it sounds OK to me here:

        I have a extra heavy Northern Ash Performance guitar from that era. It screams! It has a maple/ebony neck, so a warm sounding pickup helps!
