Guys, back in 1985 (or so) a bandmate of mine had two guitars. One was a Jackson Randy Rhodes and the other was what he claimed was a pre-production Charvel. I remember at that time being extremely impressed by the RR, but could never figure out what was so special about the so-called pre-pro Charvel.
Well, I just talked to a buddy of mine and apparently, this guy hasn't played guitar since AT LEAST 1990 and still has the guitars. My buddy says that the guy mentioned selling them. My buddy also says that the guy most likely doesn't have a clue what the guitars are worth. Well, that got me drooling. However, In my quest for a pre-pro guitar, that axe has crossed my mind several times and each time I seem to come up thinking that he was full of shit and that it's just a parts guitar.
The guy had an absentee father who loved to buy him expensive toys. His father lived in the So Cal Beach cities so aside from the actual guitar... it seems feasible.
Here's what I remember about the guitar:
1. it had a strathead with no logo
2. Body and neck / finger board were all birdseye maple
3. The finish was transparent.
4. I do recall that all of the hardware was chrome.
5. It had a chrome tremlo ... I'm a little uncertain here... but I seem to recall it looking like a Fender vintage trem but for some reason I remember a trem arm that was more kahler like... I could be confused on this one... it's been 20 years.
6. It had a chrome Fender neckplate with no serial number. When I say Fender I mean it had the big "F" on it.. it was definitely a fender logo. This was clearly not a fender guitar.
7. Single Humbucker, Single Volume Knob
That's all I know.... several of the details I provided make me want to say 'no way'. But, I don't remember a Pre-Pro charvel as something to brag about in '85, so I have no reason to believe that he would be lying about it (even though he was and still is a bullshitter).
What do you think? Please be gentle.... I'm new. ;-)
In any case... I'll prolly go after the Rhodes. You may see it on the board for sale soon ;-)
