  • San Dimas prices?

I'm planning to buy a SD Charvel, never owned one before. Don't have a lot of $$, but how much money should I collect to get a San Dimas Charvel production model (81'-86') strathead with maple fingerboard, OFR, at least 2 pickups (H/S, H/SS or H/H), solid color.
    Thanks!

    ATough question

Pointy or strat head, orig or modded? 700 to 6000 but we can narrow that down a bit...

A few good modded pointies just went on ebay. Take a peek and see if they would have fit the bill

Strathead. I'm not looking some really "special" item, just a regular thing wich plays great. Tommy bought a really nice red strathead, I'm looking something similar only with 2 or 3 pickups.

LOL! "Tommy bought a really nice red strathead" Do you know how many people pestered and I mean PESTERED Brett for that one over the years (me included) before he sold it to Tommy (as his good deed of the decade!!)

A legit s-head with an OFR (even if the Floyd is aftermarket install) is serious $$$$$$$ these days if you can even find someone to sell you one. A mutt can still be had for a reasonable price but it is still a mutt and you never know what the story is (I do have a mutt like Tommy's new red one except it has a kalher instead of a floyd and it plays killer but i did get to check it out before buying it).

I was going to say start hitting the pawnshops to see if you can get lucky - it does happen - and then I checked your location.

You should be able to get what you want in function if not name by picking up a GMW S-head on ebay (they also come up for sale here in the classifieds frequently). They are basically SD copies right down to the routes and neck profile and are significantly less expensive. If you are on a budget, it is the way to go as the quality is still there and they are alot easier to get.

              My $0.02

Bret is a cool guy. He really sets a high moral tone for what the cool collector should be. Always respect him for that even when we disagree.

                        Re: San Dimas prices?

Yeah I want the real deal. Altho I love neck-thrus, 24 frets etc. SD Charvel has the most comfortable neck, the best feel and tone of all superstrat guitars IMO. All the times I have played with SDs I just knew that they are perfect for me.
I want one for playing only, I'm not a collector, I like to play and play a lot so I need a realiable kick-ass guitar.
I have also concidered mutts, GMWs etc. I just wounder how much $$$ I should have if I have a change to grab the real deal. If I can get one with good contition (the body and the neck should be top-notch, I can always change pickups and the trem) for 1500-2000$ or even less then I start collecting some $$$ for it, if not then I have to pass.

If you want to play it. Go for a player's condition one. Of course it needs structural integrity, but look for ones with dings, dents and paintscratches and stuff.
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

You're looking at $2000 and up for almost any strathead. Mostly up.

                              Re: San Dimas prices?

Just so you know, there are a lot of us who would galdly put down up to $2k for a legit s-head (and maybe a little more). They do not come up for sale often and when they do I think you are more in the above $2500 range unless there is some question as to authenticity or it has been badly modded (refined etc.) (or if you happen to find one the no one else has found and the seller does not know what he has - it does happen, just not too often).

GMW is in your price range, are alot more available and you will not be disappointed with the quality or playability if you get one. Another thing is the floyd - a lot of legit s-heads are v-trem or kalhered. One the other hand, alot of people ordered their GMWs with floyds.

BTW, I hope people did not get the impression that I have anything against Bret or meant any disrepect. It was not intended and he is a great and honest guy in my experience. I was just somewhat taken back by the casualness of the orginally posters attitude (with over 700 posts, I kinda figured he's been around long enough to know the score). My appologies if I offended.
