  • Telehead project help?!

I always wanted a Charvel telecaster and I guess this was my closest chance at owning one. These were obtained from Rob Lane who obtained them for Grover Jacksons personal collection. Anways everything I have read about identifing Charvel necks adds up here pretty good. I dont know about the body. It has a BL initials in the neck pocket.

Anyways this thread was started not so much as to argue if its the real deal or not.

I need to know what you guys think I should do with these. I wanted to get a brass neck plate and pre pro decal and restore it to look like a Pre Pro Charvel Tele. The neck has 22 frets though. But as someone said there are no absolutes in Jackson/Charvel collecting.

My other thought is to get a real Charvel neck plate and make look like a production Charvel tele with big logo.

My Goal is butter scotch blond finish with black pickguard and to make it look like a 54 Fender tele. I want it to look San Dimas or Pre Pro era correct though with correct decal and neckplate depending on what I decide to do and was wondering if you purist can help me source the parts.

I will post pics shortly. Just so you guys know I in no way will be assembling this guitar to pass off as the real deal later. I just thought you guys might be intrested in how the restoration goes And keep you guys updated with pics.

Also if you guys think I should just the parts alone let me know.

I am also looking to use correct parts all the way through for this project down to the shielding and tuners, I mean everything.

Here are the pics of the parts, and yes I got this one off Ebay and I would have bought both bodies and necks if I had the funds.

I don't know about the body, but the neck looks great.
That would be killer as a Pre Pro...do what YOU want with it. It's YOUR guitar!

I see that he still has a neck up and body up there. If they are genuine, then you got a nice deal. I would do it wild, personally. Hot rod flames.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

            Re: Telehead project help?!

If I had both bodies I would do one in Hot Wheels Flames but I always wanted a tele in Blond but always hated Fender. my question is that the only thing from holding me back from doing the Pre Pro look is the 22 fret neck. Have you guys seen Charvels with 22 fret necks that are Pre Pro.

Looks like the second set sold, I wonder who got it.

No. 22 frets didn't come along from Charvel or anybody else till a few years later.

                Re: Telehead project help?!

It'll always be a parts monster anyway, build it the way you want it!!

If you want it to look legit,twenty-two fret neck would have the production size logo!!
Trying to find a serialized plate is just too much of a pita & nowadays too much $$ to spend on a neckplate for a parts monster project!!

Also, some dudes, myself included, will mark the neck heel & neck pocket just so the next owner doesn't(knowingly or unknowingly)try to sell it as a legit SD!!

Cool project bro, looking forward to seeing the completed pics!!

                        Re: Telehead project help?!

I was going to have whoever puts the guitar together after I get all the parts, sign and date the neck pocket. I was thinking of having GMW do it. Anyways I will be going for the production era look. So when I find a 3D neck plate I will use it and yes I know they go for 400+ dollars, but its one of the last things I will source for the guitar.

Oh, yeah my other question is. There is laquoer on the top of the headstock but not behind it or on the back of the neck. Should I leave this as is or have the back of the neck done in a satin or gloss finish. Let me rephrase what would be correct for a production era Charvel.

Headstock face should have a very light clear coat, the back of the neck is oiled!!

another thing you can do is get a set of dies (stamps? i forget what the hell you call 'em) and stamp something in the heel, your name, or "parts" or even "san dimas high school football rules!" in there.
