San Dimas Jackson Flying V body wood...

I'd like to know if the early San Dimas Flying Vs were made of mahogany? The ones that I know are really heavy which is not common for other Jackson body shapes. And I mean really heavy and not just because of the size. Mine is a tone monster and I've heard others also speak very highly of them. But I'd like to know
what body and neck wood Jackson used for them? I know they were custom ordered but what was the most common wood used?

I have no clue about the wood used...but Jani...all I've gotta say is that anyone who has a guitar hanger mounted to a tree in their backyard is hardcore!

Remove the Floyd posts and you should see the wood. You'll know instantly if it's mahogany.

Nature activists don't like it but WTF.

Actually I tooks some paint off the control cavity and it
looked like mahogany to me but it wasn't as obvious as I would have hoped. I asked cause I want to know
what was the common body wood for Flying Vs.

I will take the Floyd posts off the next time I change strings.

sure that the floyd posts don`t go into the maple neck?
they`re quite beefy sometimes
just my thought cause some of my pickupscrews are in the neckwood too, and floydposts are quite the same line......
but definitely worth a try, better than chipping paint

They didn't make many roundhorn V's to begin with...maybe 50 or so (excluding the polka dot V run) total...so there probably isn't a specific wood they used for them as they were all custom ordered to individual customer specs.

I have 4 Roundhorns and they are all alder.

Newc - Here is a pic of the the wood under 3-way switch. Please identify it from the grain cause the color is subject to camera, monitor etc.

Yup - looks like mahogany. It seems very porous, and mahogany is the most porous body wood (more than Alder or Poplar anyway).

Thanks guys! It seems that mahogany gets all the votes and that was my own guess also. The guitar is really heavy so alder and poplar are out of the question and maple would be much lighter in color.
Anyway, when Gregg ordered the guitar he didn't recall wanting any spesific wood. That's why I thought mahogany was the common wood for Flying Vs. It would make sense since it was a model loaned from Gibson. And like I said they are known as really heavy guitars which is not normal for Jacksons.

Now I need to check if the neck is maple. It sounds that way but I want to be sure. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Routing a middle pickup cavity will tell if it's a maple neck [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/poke.gif[/img]

Seriously, though, you might be able to remove one of the claw bolts in the trem cavity to see the neck wood, or under the trussrod cover, but then those areas usually got painted black. There have been some cases of them being masked and then cleared natural, though.

Tuner holes might tell as well.

This is a GMW refin and all cavities are painted. I have to go with the middle pickup option. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Claw bolts might be a good option. Or taking paint off under the pickups. This guitar will be mine forever so I don't really care if I have to take off paint from areas where it doesn't show. I will have a look tomorrow and let you know what I find. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Does the locking nut platform go into the neck itself or just the fretboard?

Thanks for the tip Newc - the locking nut screws go through the neck so that should help.
