Re: Eddie interview

[ QUOTE ]
You guys don't hold your "Gods" to higher standards? Pretty sad, don't you think? To me, gods and heroes overcome their adversaries and adversity without a chink in their armor. That's why we look up to them. I think alcoholism has weathered Eddie to the point of near obscurity.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, I don't. I don't really care what he does in his private life, that is his business. The only thing about Ed that angers me is that he won't get back together with Roth and gives us what we want.

I think you/we should use the term "rock god" for clarity here. With that in mind he seems to be right in line with most the others ie. Robbin, Jake, etc.............

That's fine, but his private life is affecting the future of any life at all. Next thing you know we'll all be saying, "Rember when Eddie was alive..."

Re: Eddie interview

He's a guitar hero to me, Todd. Very far removed from a god, in my belief system. His family issues, personality, alcoholism or how many bowel movements he has in a day, does nothing to change my perception of his musical talents or the music he has created.

I had parents to look up to, I didn't need Eddie for that. He was escapism from reality for me - put the tunes on and disappear. Enjoy the brilliance of his music, tone and technique. The only chinks in EVH's armor that concerned me were the cigarette burns on his headstock.

Did Criss Oliva's day to day life really matter that much to you? If it did, please tell me why...I would like to hear your reasoning.

+1 I often think of all the great music we have been denied, because someone let themselves be a victim. Jimi Hendrix comes to mind a lot, and while he went a lot quicker, Ed is certainly going the same way.

I'm sorry to find out you have cancer, Jimmy, but I assume your fighting it? Eddie doesn't appear to be putting up a fight at all. How many times did Dave Mustaine have to got through rehab before he kicked the habit? The latest trip was on the World Needs a Hero tour, where he started drinking with Al Pitreli in the back of the tour bus. Rather than give in, he took himself back for the eleventh or twelth time

I just don't take EVH seriously anymore. He has let something come between his music and his family, and he has barely put any effort into stopping it.

Re: Eddie interview

The interview is from my area. Those local DJ's are clown that call Eddie every now & then. Eddie always takes the time to talk to them - at great length too. Those DJ's don't give 2 shits about EVH the guitar hero. They'd rather know Inquirer scoop than developments with a new Wolfgang or amp model. They only call Eddie because he's chatty and it makes them look cool. They sound like a couple groupies on the phone. It really irks me!

It's a shame that one of us, who have been influenced by his creativity, can't get the chance to talk to him on the radio and ask him some intelligent questions. If I were to call that radio station, tell them I'm a guitar player, I play Charvels, I'd like to talk to Eddie, they'd think that subject was boring and hang up on me. Instead they put people on who ask, "So.. do you play with your son?"
DUH!!!

I'd gladly forgoe any future recordings by VH, if it helped the guy overcome his demons. His life is much more important than his music or legacy.

The only one who can help Ed, is Ed himself.

I didn't know much about Criss' day to day life. You're talking about someone who is living in a fishbowl compared to Criss' relatively unknown celebrity. I'm sure Criss partied and had fun. Did this partying diminish his capacity to write or release new material or get along with band members? Did it cause a sense of bitterness that made him sic lawyers on anyone who painted guitars like his and sold them? I didn't see it. Criss wasn't on the path of self-destruction that Eddie is. There has been no indication that he was either.

Who knows, maybe if Criss wasn't killed by a drunk driver, he might be as self-destructive as his brother. But like Eddie, I would still say it's a shame and a waste of talent.

OK, "God" is a strong term, but Hero is just as good in my book. These are all people we look up to due to their talents. Eddie's talents are being robbed from us very much in the same way that Jason Becker's was. It's a disease, it's tragic. I wish Eddie the best, but he's NOT the same guitarist/person he was back in the Dave days and it shows. Not only in his work, but in his private life. (which isn't so private)

Re: Eddie interview

We all hold Eddie in very high regard, that is why is hurts us to see him slowly kill himself with his own vices.

Through his music, many of us feel we know him in a way only another musician or fan of music could know him. We here his innovation, we hear the sweat, we hear the hours of practice. Musician to musician, we are all connected to Eddie in a way the average radio listener is not.

It is the above reason we are all quick to point out his faults. We care about the guy It hurts me to see Eddie waste away, ruin his relationships, and sound drunk during a radio interview.

The way we all feel about Eddie is the same reason the death of Dime hurt so many of us in a very deep way. As musicians, as guitar players, we felt we somehow knew and understood who he was.

I wouldn't tell my brother he's doing a good job and how much I look up to him if he was a drunk with his life going down the tubes. Hopefully I would care about him enough to tell him the truth.

Yeah sure I have fought my cancer for over a decade and I will again if it reappears. But that is MY decision to make for me and my family. I appreciate your concern but if I dropped dead tomorrow how much sweat would fall off your forehead for me? I think I know the answer.

My whole point is that it doesn't matter to me if he's alive or dead - I would prefer alive so the reunion can happen - the music lives long after he's gone.

No offense, but I don't look up to you. I know you as a guy on a message board. We'll probably have our an on-board memorial (like we did with the other JCFr who passed away, sadly, I forgot his name, but I know he was killed in a car accident) but I haven't spent hours pouring over your CDs to learn how you played such and such a lick. I haven't studied your playing to the point where I think I can answer your sentences for you.

Reunion isn't going to happen while Eddie is in this state. We were lucky to get two more songs out of Van Halen and Van Hagar as well as a tour out of Van Hagar.

How tall are you, Todd. Maybe you would look up to me if we met; maybe I would look up to you.

No offense taken, BTW. I get your drift - it just seems that mine is pissing away in the wind.

Not very tall, but by the time I looked up to someone, I've already figured out how to bring them down to my level.
