Hi folks. Good to be back, having succeeded in tracking the JCF down to its new location! I hope some of you can help me with information about a new Charvel I picked up here in London yesterday. I'm a bit mystified because although the guitar was new (albeit ex-display), it appears to be eight years old if my sketchy knowledge of Charvel history and serial numbers is accurate - weird. I can only imagine it's been stuck in a UK distributor's warehouse for a while, and has only escaped now because they're clearing everything out after the Fender sale.
It's a Charvel, with serial number 951029. It has pretty much the same shape as the recent Japanese-made range (Journeyman, Standard, Traditional, etc.) except it's lacking the upper-fret-access body countouring they put on those. And it is "Made in the USA", according to the headstock and backplate. It has bolt-on neck, dark fingerboard (I assume rosewood), 24 frets, "vintage-style" trem, volume and tone pots and 5-way selecter, three DiMarzio pickups (H/S/S) and Sperzel locking tuners. The label it had in the shop says "STD 6 CSD", which means nothing to me ... and may not be true either, since the label also said "Jackson"!
From what little I know, I guess it was made in 1995, and is part of the San Dimas-made range made from 1994 to 1997? Anyway, it would be great to know a little more, e.g.:
- What is its proper name (e.g. what does "CSD" mean, if that's what it is)?
- What is the body made of (alder?)
- Is the very beautiful neck made of quartersawn maple, as it looks like?
- Is the fingerboard rosewood (I'm pretty sure it must be)?
- Does anyone by any chance know exactly what DiMarzio p/ups it has in it?
Any help much appreciated. I'm really happy with it. It's beautiful in every way, except perhaps the trem unit - which looks a little downmarket on an otherwise immaculately classy-looking instrument. Does anyone retro-fit Floyd Rose's onto these things? Or is that sacrilege? Maybe it would anyway need to be a Jackson Floyd Rose-licenced unit to fit??
