• SD1 has landed! Pix!

I FINALLY got this Koa Charvel San Dimas I Reissue, which I have been lusting after for what seems like forever. I haven't had a chance to play it through my main gear yet (just my little G-DEC & TM10), so I can't comment on the sound yet, but I love the look and feel.

I was worried that the neck might feel too thick, since I'm into thin/wide necks, but it feels fantastic. I have never played an actual San Dimas Charvel before, but if this is what they feel like, sign me up.

I believe thats a SDII? Not sure but I think the difference was pickup configuration and the fretboard.

You got this one from JCFer Pencilsketch right? Thats a really nice one, I was trying to make a deal for it but it just didn't end up happening. I'll get one someday.

Give her a try unplugged as well or clean through and amp and you will be blown away by the awesomeness that is koa

How you liking the pau ferro board?

That looks great, and it is an SD1 (SD2s had a Wilkinson bridge) One of my favourite guitars is my Koa SD1

Not wanting to be pedantic, but that's not what folks refer to as a San Dimas Charvel - that guitar was made in Ontario, and is part of the 'San Dimas Reissue' series. Not sure why the series was referred to as a 'Re-issue' as the specs are nothing like an original SD Charvel, and the guitars feel totally different.....

If this is pencilsketch's SD, his had a gold OFR added anyways along with gold bezels so dunno what bridge this guitar had originally. Regardless I got it backwards, I thought the SD1's had Wilkinsons

Oh and your pedantic

So these were Ontario made? I don't think I knew that either. Alot of people think the Ontario guitars were the best though, so that may not be a bad thing.

These guitars were made in the mid 90's, long after the move to Ontario....

It's interesting how he calls you pedantic yet calls out the details on where it's made.... Pot or kettle?

Yes, you will score one. I've been tracking this one for what seems like years. Persistence finally paid off for me, and I am confident that it will for you, too.

Wow, is the fretboard Pau Ferro? I assumed it was Rosewood.

According to the 1996 Charvel Catalogue, it's Rosewood....

I know it wasn't made in San Dimas. I read somewhere that Charvel had meticulously copied a San Dimas neck for the Reissues. Thus, if the originals have necks that feel like this one, I understand why so many people love 'em.

The original bridge was a Jackson logo'd Floyd. It was a tiny bit pitted so it was replaced with a new OFR. The pickup rings are also added. I believe it has a Super 3 in the bridge. I don't remember whats in the neck. It plays, sounds and looks fantastic. I did a gig with it on Jan 7th.
It was a really fun guitar to play although many of the people that come to see our band always expect me to be playing Ibanez guitars so they were actually a little miffed when I showed up with 2 Charvels. I'll take care of them at the next gig with my RBM1 and S540.

I know some of them had pau ferro boards but maybe it was only the high end models (III and IV). I can't tell from the picture. Thats a shame because pau ferro goes extremely well with koa. Both visually and sonically.

Were the III and IV any more "high end" than the I and II? If so, how? I've never heard that before.

Incidentally, does anyone know where I can find some high res scans of the catalog pages for these? I have some scans, but they're so small, they're barely readable.
