Charvel history

With the recent purchase of a SD strat head I have become more interested in Charvels history. The one thing I can't seem to find is why was the Charvel line terminated and then introduced as the model series? At the time most Jacksons were neck thru models and Charvels were bolt ons. Did Jackson not like the in house compitition? Or was it move to take a recognizable name and go after the entry level and midlevel line of guitar sales?
