• 96 San Dimas Reissues

I've read (sandimascharvel.com?) that these weren't that great. What's the general scoop?

Also I've seen stuff like "Charvel San Dimas Reissue III". What's the significance of the "III"? I thought there was only one mid-90's reissue prior to the most recent one in 2002/3 (which everyone seems to dig).

I have personally noticed that Koa natural finishes seem common among the mid-90's reissues.

i like my SD reissues!
i can´t belive, that someone says that they aren´t great guitars.

in that reissue series, there were six different models availible.

mod. I had a OFR trem, two HB and was made of: Koa, Australian Lacewood or African Mahogany.
mod. II was like the mod. I but only had a wilkinson trem. and no OFR.
mod. III had a HB and two HB in SC-size, OFR and was made of Mahogany with a quilted maple top on it.
mod. IV were nearly the same as mod III but with matching headstock and Koa body instead of mahogany.
then there was the Traditional which looks like a "normal" start with pickguard and the Standard model with H/S/S and vintage trem.

if you look here, you can see my two SD reissue models.

Re: 96 San Dimas Reissues

The mid 90s guitars were bad if you compared them directly to the san dimas guitars from the 80s. They are totally different guitars. If you bought one thinking it was going to be just like an old one, you likely hated the 90s guitar.

I've owned a III, four traditionals and two standards, and all were good guitars. I still have two of the traditional strats - one of them I'll probably be buried with. It sounds and plays great... I was in a band with a guy who had a custom Anderson built for NAMM, and he admitted that my charvel sounded better than his boutiquey guitar. I bought two San Dimas Charvels back in 96'

My Koa with gold harware with custom dimarzios and Floyd ( my main guitar since '96) and still looks new!

and a San Dimas III with trans green quilt over mahogany ...with Tone Zone , Chopper / fast trck pups (This I still have the tags on )

I waited a year for that one ...it's so solid and beautiful I don't want to play it it's too pretty

I own a trans purple Artchtop EVH Wolfgang with locking w /d-tuna

and an American Strat "floyd Rose classic" "custom shop" with PAF pro waited a year and a half for that one in yngwie yellow and maple. .

and an USA RRI Lighting sky

If there was a fire.. first one I'm running to save is my two San Dimas's ...I think I'd rather give up a kidney than to loose those,,,,maybe even a testicle or two !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bret much prefers 21 and 22 fret Charvels and as such isn't the biggest fan of the 24 fret San Dimas series, but yeah, they are excellent guitars. My fave is my SD1 in Koa, awesome playing and sounding guitar. I like 24 fret guitars myself and the SD's of the 90's are solid, well made guitars with top notch hardware.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Indeed he is. Not only does sandimascharvel.com (and this site) have top billing in my Favorites folder, Bret (sorry for the typo) has graciously answered personal email regarding technical questions.

Glad that people have high opinions of the 90's San Dimas line, cuz I personally love the variety of flame top finishes that they show up in and would like to score one. I saw that one on ebay. Hmmm.

Re: 96 San Dimas Reissues

I think what you interpreted as Bret not liking them on his site was really him saying that they're not the same as the Charvels made in San Dimas, and by calling them that they did them a disservice. A long while ago someone suggested that we call the originals San Dimas Charvels, and the mid-90s reissues as Charvel San Dimas'. I've done that ever since.

I've had a few of them... i'll chime in a bit..

II koa w/floyd
III green w/floyd
III purple w/floyd
IV tobacco sunburst w/floyd (sold to someone here)

sold them all once i got my first anderson, now i have 5 andersons

Not bad guitars at all, but i did notice, that there were some good ones and some bad ones.. quality control seemed to be kinda laxed. The difference between my 2 III's was huge. My green III (better of the two) was heavy as a les paul, 3 sets with that and you wanted to die.

Also, just want to clarify that I visited sandimascharvel.com again and could not find any disparaging comments regarding the mid-90's reissues. I seem to be imagining things.

He (Brent?) does state his opinion that the best post-"San Dimas" Jackson/Charvel guitars are the neck-throughs from the Jackson Custom Shop.

Thanks again.
