it depends. There's gunk, and then there is gunk.

I don't mind discolouration, or a nicely worn maple fretboard, but I'm not too keen on playing in another man's gunk. A couple of my pawnshop finds have demanded some serious gunk removal before I could fully enjoy them.

But by and large, my own gunk don't worry me none. As long as the strings are fairly fresh, it's all good.

That fingerboard gung is what us at GC call Schmunda. As long as it's not Schmunda from down unda. I try too keep my guitars as clean as possable. Although I don't wipe them down when down playing I do remove the Schmunda at every string change. At work that's another issue. Sometimes there is so much ickyness to a guitar that a customer trades in its just nasty and nobody wants to touch it. SO i get out the sand blaster and the flamethrower and have at it.

1-hairspray and makeup gunk.
2-cocaine gunk. dope gunk.(gunk from rubbing it on your gums)
3-beer gunk and residue
4-job gunk(construction,mechanic, etc.)
4-girly gunk (the best kind)
5-gunk (from spanking)
6-beach gunk
7-bar gunk
8-guitar setup and repair gunk
there's got to be more.

if its my gunk I don't mind...other wise I'll clean then off and build up my own gunk. unfinished maple necks are geaat for the gunked in feel.

I left the fingerboard gunk buildup on my maple/maple Warmoth for many a year only cleaning it partially when it got overboard.
