• Charvel guitars, value, money and favorites..

Having the incredible pleasure and luck to have acquired such a large collection of Charvels, the questions I get asked the most are, what is my favorite(s) and what is the highest $$ you paid for a single Charvel guitar.

Both questions remind me of my youth and are the same questions I asked my friends upon seeing all their Fender Teles on stands..of course my first question to them was why do you need more than one guitar, lol but I was a mere kid trying to understand how EVH did Eurption and did not have full blown G.A.S at that age.

Lets start with price and $$. This is subjective and the only real rules when it comes to value and money are supply and demand and its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Having said that I will base this discussion on what I was comfortable paying for some of my Charvels back 6 years compared with today.

When I came on the scene in the late 90's I was hell bent to grab as many as I could because I loved them. At that time, I was strictly looking for Charvels with graphics (I lost out on some great plain janes, damn it!). Back then pointy neck Charvels with graphics and Kahler were usually $650ish and you see them sometimes on ebay sometimes on gbase. The value to me though was worth more, that is I was willing ot spend more to insure I was able to close the deal. I didn't care when bidding on ebay would go over the going price of $700ish. In fact I often threw in a top bid of some $1.6k to ensure I won. For the record most of the ones from ebay at that time I won for about $1K or so..some lower, some higher and I don't think I was ever outbid. The prices for this style (kahler, pointy) IMO has not increased that much in the past 5 or 6 years. The typical price now is $1.3k BUT the problem is that you have many more people throwing high bids down so the market value gets inflated. Hell me and Mr Annoyn just drove that Versatel Star w/added Floyd to over $2.6k on ebay. Why, because supply and demand, 2 people wanted the same guitar. I lost obviosuly and what is even funnier is that I had the deal wrapped up and paid for that guitar a few years ago when the seller first went to sell. Back then I had wrapped the deal up off line for $1500 shipped. His reserve at that time was a mere $600!!!

V-trem pointies always commanded more attention and hence $$. Average price back when I started was $850 or so. I came in and immediately started paying $1200 - 1400 for the clean ones, why because I wanted them and these are some of my faves. I am not good with money but have NEVER regretted over paying, why because I love them. Today the prices on clean v-trem pointies have really increased and I have lost bidding at $2k and even more for v-trem, graphic pointies in recent times. V-trems always seem to be more desirable and more people wanted to obtain one.

Strat Heads..I will pick up the story to when I started acquiring 100% legit examples. Like everyone, you learn by getting F'd in the ass and the first 3 Strat head Charvels I bought were all fakes, mutts or GMW refins.

I got my first legit strat head for $1600 the blueburst one hum, v-trem and my next one for $1350. Average price back then was $1500 and up with most being in the $1500 - 1800 range. Fast forward a mere 4 or 5 years and a Strat Head that is original and clean have sky rocketed. Most seem to start at $2.2k and most are hitting $4 and $5K. Yes I have paid over $5k for several of mine. Why because believe it or not thats the price it took for people to sell them. Some were not for sell at any price.

Strat Head Charvels that are all original, clean and especially with graphics have gotten semi crazy...easily most will hit $3k MINIMUM these days and top prices are over $5k.

So from a pure $$ side I think the Kahler equipped pointies are the best deals and the prices are somewhat stable. V-trem pointies have increased by about 20% and Strat Heads have increased by 500 or more %. In fact most highly collectible Strat Heads are sold without the general public knowing or hearing about them.

Top 5 Favorites within my collection:
1. White pointy 1 hum, kahler, red blood splatter
2. Parts Camo 1 hum, kahler, pointy with my $15 paint job
3. tie between RedRum and Gibson head explorer #1176
5. My recent purple w/cream splatter factory floyd 2 hum, pointy.

In general I prefer pointy necks but trems don't matter that much...Kahlers are cool as are floyds but I guess if I had to choose I would prefer v-trems.

Top 5: Most I paid for a Charvel guitar:
1. EVH Strat Head $5.5k
2. Bulls Eye Strat Head $5k
3. Explorer, 3 pku, kahler pointy $3.3k
4. Marilyn Monroe Pointy $3.5k
5. deal never went through..I offered $7k for a HRF 21 fret really earlier serialized Strat Head..was told not for sell at $7k.

Anyway as you can see $$ and desirability are not necessarily the same. I loved Marilyn from the first time I saw it and chased it for nearly 3 years offering stupid money (especially back then) until I got it. Some will say thats stupid/crazy but thats what I wanted and thats the price it took to won her not to mention they are so hard to find. No regrets!

Finally Top 5 Charvels I still like to own:
1. HRF Strat Head...searching for ever for one
2. EVH Strat Head but 21 fretter (love 21 fret necks)
3. Big mouth graphis pointy or start head
4. Flying V, 1 hum V-trem, pointy neck
5. Strat Head w/3 single coils TITE and v-trem

Of course as you know the above list will never end..lol...I love them all.

Anyway just my editorial for today..hope you enjoyed it..stay tuned for more topics.

Cheers
Tracy

Great collection! If your blood drip and skull (4342) ever needs a new home, I would adopt it. No....I am serious...really.

And BTW, if that EVH strat head is #1556, then we've already talked about my interest on this particular axe! Don't forget!

Great post, Tracy. Very informative, like everything else you offer in the way of Charvel info!

And I'm with you...the 21 fret neck is a beautiful thing. I love the one on my new Star.

Hey Tracy I must say that that was a fantastic post and a real cool insight into your collection. I always visit your sight and drool over your Charvel 2895 I cannot to this day find any other guitar that speaks volumes to me like this one it is in my estimation one of the coolest guitars ever PERIOD!!! My all time favourite guitar is Lynchs Mr Graffitti and again its a simple basic guitar with so much but if the choice was #2895 or the Mr Graffitti it would be the Charvel!!! I have contemplated building a replica like yours but I somehow don't think I could ever get to grips with it not being a real San Dimas but maybe I will do it to satisfy my desire so who knows maybe this is the way to go.

Thanks guys I was trying to help out CC but me and the owner Bret (slo100) seem to not gel right now....damn censorship so I will try and post more here.

I have a few more of this type of topics that I will do here if you guys ar interested.

Next one will be competition between collectors, clash of egos, the Almighty Bret, why old school collectors often disappear from the on line community, jealousy and why some collectors feel so dman strongly about these guitars that they take it personally and sometimes have veins pop out of their heads.

Luckily I don't take it that seriuously so I will start adding more posts here to kinda give you my perspective on Charvel Land currently.

Cheers and I am glad you guys enjoyed the post.

Great post. I enjoy getting the inside scoop into the collector's mentality. Its amazing how the prices have really skyrocketed for no other reason than the buyer's desire to own the guitar. That is the mark of a true collector's item - the lack of a price ceiling.

Back to guitars...

Great topic, and a question I get asked often also. Granted, these are Jacksons, but they're my top 5 favorites in my collection. I'm not able to reveal what I paid because I will probably kill myself if I add it up.

1) Shannon Shortwing #3
2) LTD-003-VTS
3) Vinnie Vincent V
4) J0497 - early zebra soloist
5) tie between my White Shannon soloist or my NAMM Shannon prototype

Best player - hands down - my custom shop dinky archtop with the maple board.

Best purchase - probably LTD-003-VTS. It took me 2 years to find a v-trem and I sacrificed a great Shannon and cash to get it.

Maybe we should move this topic (or an abreviated version) to the General J/C header. I'd like to see what the big collector's opinions are.

Re: Charvel guitars, value, money and favorites..

My favorite player is my 1988 archtop Soloist. Some guitars are a dagger or a switchblade, that guitar is a Swiss Army. It is also beautiful to the eye.

Most expensive:
1985 King V Custom $1500
1985 King V Custom $1500
1985 Roundhorn V $1450
1992 Coors Light graphic Soloist $1200
1985 Rising Sun graphic Soloist $1100

As can be seen I don't pay much for my Jacksons compared to what you Charvel guys dish out. If these go to that level, I will likely stop buying.

Re: Charvel guitars, value, money and favorites..

Actually that is a great point...

you often hear people say: " if he gets that for such an such a guitar I be putting mine up for sell too.." or "if that guy is so stupid to pay that for such a guitar I am going to cash out and sell him mine too.."

We all have heard/read these comments many times here on JCF. The truth is, that is actually how I purchased the bulk of my collection whne I first started. People saw me buy something off of ebay or from the classifieds for X dollars and said man for that kind of money you can have mine too. I gladly said yes and was able to grab about 10 in that fashion.

Of course in todays market I got a steal on them but back in the day I was paying $200 more than anyone else (remember pointies w/graphics and Kahlers were $600ish so I would gladly pay $800ish which was some 30% higher tahn average price) but they were happy to get a good price and I was more than happy to acquire that particular Charvel.

Funny, some think that was a great move I made back in the day but I gotta admit the money part has never worried me at all..I rarely sell and I have never regretted over paying. I buy because I enjoy them.

Anyway a great point.

I bought my first USA Jackson about 4 yrs ago. I bought my 2nd about 2 months ago and I have bought 2 more in the last week or so and I am about to pull the trigger on another. Think I have GAS? Someone stop me

Believe me, I enjoy them too. I simply can't afford to buy every big ticket guitar that I come across without justifying it. No big deal there, it just is one of those things I have to deal with the best I can. If Jacksons went over $2K each, I would enjoy what I have and maybe go for a piece that really moved me, not just buying up anything that falls in my scope of interest (like I kind of do now).

Great topic. Very cool to read the different
perspectives on this hobby.
I'm new into the Charvel collector world but loved the guitars as a kid and that's why I'm here on this site now.

I was into vintage Fenders for awhile and bought
stuff like a one owner '55 tele, '62 strat, and
about 50 other high end guitars over about a 3 year span.
Then I got bored with the guitars, the snobbery of the vintage Fender market, and the fakes.

The Charvels and Jacksons are more of a niche market and I like that much better. If you go to a guitar show it is not 200 people after the same exact thing as it is with the Fender collectors.
Back when I was a kid I had Deans but also wanted Jacksons, BC Richs, and all the other cool US made "hot rod" guitars. Now that I can afford what I want, I intend to fulfill some of those dreams.

I personally feel that most of the older Charvels and Jacksons are priced pretty fairly considering the small numbers of production.
