Re: Charvel guitars, value, money and favorites..

How about some stories from anyone who came across a Charvel super-cheap,as in the owner didn't know any better? Pawn shop finds and the like? Anyone gone hunting and scored big? Or does this just not happen anymore?

I had the chance to pick up a red 2-hum pointy w/kahler back in the early 90's for $200! It was a friends guitar, plenty of playing wear on the thing but I turned it down because I had just bought a Soloist and at the time felt that the Charvel was an inferior guitar anyway.Well hell, big mistake on my part but back then I really had no idea they were going to be so sought after or I would have jumped on it.

So now when I travel I look in every music store/pawn shop and classified I can get my hands on ... hoping

It happens ..they come out of the woodwork ..

Greg Crowes prepro Bullseye $450 on ebay
Tracy"s Haircut special prepro
The recent $599 prepro star
My Cherryburst 83 was $799

They're out there.. the problem is a few things..We all get narrow minded in thinking that ebay and the internet have control of the market..in a sense they do for us because it is all we really see, but people who get the good score are usually the ones who just happen to stumble into em away from the internet. The internet has created and educated the buyer as well as an educated seller.. and an educated seller knows the value of his wares... I'm sure we'll see more great scores ..when you expect not to see it ..then it'll pop up .. we are all waiting for that time machine where someone had cash to burn but couldn't play it and stuffed it under a bed ..years later when he remembers he has it and the deck needs fixin it goes up in a local paper or a local music store or even word of mouth ....

Yelp agree Kev, my Haircut special was $375 but came with an nonoriginal case...lol. The deals are out there as you said, you just gotta be LUCKY enough to be at the right place at the right time.

Of all the good deals in Charvel Land I think Greg had the biggest score ever, only because it was a public auction.

I still cringe when I see what people pay for the "real" ones, but I understand (I have to lose a hobby or two as I am also into some non-PC things which also tend to rather pricy and I am not selling that stuff to finance a guitar).

Intersting topic and certainly great reading for anyone interested in these guitars (which I most certainly am).

Thanks for sharing. Always appriciated.

Re: Charvel guitars, value, money and favorites..

I have been involved in the vintage Fender market for about half of my life. Fakes are no big deal to many of us as there are always signs. What has become a problem that I myself have even done is the parting out of guitars that were refinished. Too many guitars are being hauled apart because they are worth more in parts than as a whole. The snobbery is there, but it is even in this market (ie. Kahler vs. Floyd Rose). It IS fun going to shows and being able to actually score something cool. I just wish I could find more.

Re: Charvel guitars, value, money and favorites..

I got my first one in 1983, #2089 pointy, it was $1250 as I recall.
My best deal was my Holdsworth #3336 at $500 from the original owner. He brought it to my local shop and they gave me the first call. Getting the first call is a big factor for any collectible guitar, there is always a buyer.
My most expensive was #1505...bought that one 3 times!! I can't bear to admit the money I have into that.
But all of these axes are bigger than the dollar amount to me. They allow me to get the tones I want and play to the best of my ability.
When buying any guitar that is collectible, you have to be ready to step up and pay next years price sometimes if you really want it.
I hope I can afford a few more!

Re: Charvel guitars, value, money and favorites..

In 1985, when I was 15, I went to work in a local music store doing cleaning, pulling stuff down off the shelf for customers, etc. On the rare occassion a used Charvel was taken in trade, it went very quickly and for a very good price. In the early 1990's, the shop would see an occassional Charvel or Jackson in trade and, if lucky, the guitar would sell for 300-400 dollars. I was in college and broke, so I never had a chance to pick one up. Based on what I have learned about Charvels and Jacksons over the years, many would have been SD guitars and I am sure that they were in their original condition when traded in.

One guy (who was killed in a motorcycle accident about six years ago) bought most of these guitars that were traded in during the early 90's. I learned that his wife remarried and still lives near here, but I have been unable to track her down. It may seem sort of sick, but I would really like to find this lady and make her an offer on those guitars if she still has them. You know, to help her move on and all.

Trypp, somewhere in there is a Penthouse Forum story waiting to be written.

Ah, the classic works of literature that make up the Penthouse Forum stories.

Seriously though, if memory serves me correctly (and considering the amount of time I spent sitting around playing those guitars before they sold) he purchased three used Charvels and two used Jacksons. I believe those guitars are still in the general area of where I live and I hope to track them down.

There was a solid red strathead, with two humbuckers and a v-trem that played and sounded incredible. It was just an incredible neck on that guitar.
