So, if I'm paying big custom shop bucks for a guitar built by Mike Shannon and painted by Dan Lawrence, are they actually doing the work or are they semi-supervising the build?

THAT is a great question. Surprised to see it out of you, but I digress.
That was before sending it in for re-paint. The face of the headstock is fine now. What myself and others are wondering is why it was sent out that way in the first place. And I wondered why after getting it back, it still had tape residue on it and mis-matched finish on the sides of the headstock where it was taped and sanded, three or four dents in the back of the neck, and what looks like buckle rash on the trem plate. I sent in a brand new guitar. And none of this is preferance of set-up or climate change issues which some may think the Custom Shop has control of.

I cannot speak on how things are running in the Charvel/Jackson Custom Shop.
But my understanding of the Fender CS is that the Master builder selects the wood, shapes the body, does the final neck settings, touch ups etc. BUT the sanding, shaping, painting, assemling, tuning, PUP install, etc. is done by his close team of workers. I was suprised how little the Master builders really do.
But sometimes the things you want as far woods, finishes, necks etc. FORCE you to go CS Masterbuilt and they have your butt.
These guys (i.e. Shannon in the Charvel Shop, Kendrick/English/Krause in the Fender CS) are just too damn busy with upcoming shows, artists/endorsers and orders in general to be doing EVERYTHING on a specific guitar and still ship however many they do a month. Charvel +/- 20 pieces per month and Fender +/- 120 pieces per month.
All in all they do a pretty darn good job. But shit happens sometimes and sadly the lemons are often heard the loudest vs the success stories. If the axe is a hit you just take it home play it, take some pics for the dudes here and that is all she wrote.
The lemon gets paraded and shit goes flying every direction. Hey! after close to two grand and months in waiting, you bet someone should make some noise.
I am disapointed you got it like that for a second time.

I'm wondering too. What probably happened is that it was OK when it left and then the delam started to happen shortly after that. Regardless, it should not happen. My point is: We do everything we can to make sure they are 100% when they go out, but stuff like this can and does happen after it leaves the shop. The additional "damage" should NOT have happened when it came back to us. Please get me pics so I can document this. You can send them to me at [email protected]
So your saying that the mismatched paint and tape resisdue came from the dealer, not the CS? WOW,The dealer put the dents on the neck and scratched the plate up?
