I've heard good things about Bud @ American Music Exchange in Encinitas, but I've never had problems with the guys at Guitar Trader on Clairmont Mesa Blvd.
+1 Fred has always treated me right..he used to be at Guitar Trader before doing his own thing (Repair Zone and Naked Guitars). Awesome guy, does great work and builds some nice guitars.

Oh damn, it's been a while since I've used Guitar Trader ... Fred was the dude I used to go to there, didn't know he had moved on to other things!
Just wanted to follow up in case anyone finds this thread via search. Fred and company at the Repair Zone were able to get my Charvie in and out overnight and did an absolutely amazing job. Excellent service, great people.
Also: Fred hadn't seen the new Charvels yet. He grabbed her out of the case and said, "Damn! They're just like the old ones!" Ha. When I picked her up the next day, his comment was that she was "one sick puppy."
Good service, fast turnaround, AND compliments. Wow! Tee hee.
What'd ya have done "MR. BUTLER?" Both san dimas' of mine had a full intonation and shimming of the neck to LOWER the action. It came "OK" but could have been better for sure. Like anything mass produced...they want it out the door and have a nice day. You can always improve it!
If you're willing to drive to the "Evil Empire"... I know a few people... they happen to work in some factory in corona.... Probably do it for a case o beer too... (maybe a little more, but not much)
I didn't have anything too special done: Neck bow correction, intonation, and dropping the bridge height. The neck didn't need a shim. When she arrived, she had some pretty crazy high action.
The factory neck and fret dressing was flawless ... if Charvel wants to pay attention to things like fret ends, fingerboard rolling, and oiling while leaving the rest of the setup to a local tech to do for a coupla bucks, fine by me. The necks on these new Charvels are utterly pornographic.
I couldn't agree more! In all sincerity, I have contemplated thinning my herd(3DR firecrackle, pearl white predator and POSSIBLY my white soloist) for another U.S.A. Not sure which color this time. They're that much better than the rest!
I am a fan of BRUTALLY low action, my luthier knows this and tried his best to set-up the guitar to play the way i like it. I'll give him an A for effort, it was close...but I always have the final adjustment at hand!
Glad to hear yours went from Excellent to Supreme! Enjoy that bad boy. Mine are snoozing in the cases. Trying to get my King V to play reasonably well. Action is God awful on it.(MUCH too high)
