  • Switch out NOS Brass Charvel Trem....

Can the new San Dimas Charvel Strat NOS brass vintage tremolo be swapped out with a chrome vintage placement Fender-type tremolo? Would there be problems with gaps, spacing , placement etc... I would love to order a Holdsworth Type Charvel Strathead (Or see a limited run) But Dimarzio no longer makes their Vintage replacement tremolos. And I was going to check and see if Charvel would 1.) place a Vintage replacement chrome tremolo. Or 2.) Have Charvel make a Strathead to specs and switchout their tremolo. Any advise thoughts rants would be appreciated.

Check with GMW, Lee uses chrome bridges on his Polka V's...

Finding a chrome trem is do-able David, whether or not it will retro-fit a brass v-trem is the issue!!I recently had a newer brass v-trem for a friends project & it did not line up to the holes on an 81' body!!

Man...why on earth WOULD you want to mod that Charvel??

It's your guitar...do what you want...but that looks premo as is...modding it would totally destroy the value of it IMO....

        Is that a Holdsworth perchance??

Good luck on finding a replacement....if you do change out the trem...good luck

I don't think he wants to. His question was this: "Can the new San Dimas Charvel Strat NOS brass vintage tremolo be swapped out with a chrome vintage placement Fender-type tremolo?"

Yeah...I used to own a Holdsworth. I wouldn't butcher a Holdsworth! Chuck owns it now. What I was trying to do was order a new Charvel Strathead with Holdsworth specs...and swap out the Brass NOS Charvel Tremolo(it would come with-I'm not sure if Charvel would make a Strathead without the Brass Tremolo) with a Chrome Vintage replacement tremolo like the Dimarzio tremolo found on the original Holdsworth.

If it is a Custom Shop order you can probably specify a chrome v-trem and let Jackson worry about finding ya one for the build.

Keep looking for a Dimarzio trem One will pop up. Then order the guitar. I think it is a very important part of a Holdsworth.

                  BTW, excellent CS order idea

It´s funny, I am also thinking about a CS order for a Holdsworth strat and wondered about how to get a chrome v-trem in there.

For that reason I bought an old mighty mite chrome trem that looked ok on ebay for $ 110 last month. It hasn´t arrived yet so I cannot tell if it was worth the hassle. I wouldn´t bother to put in a mighty mite instead of a Dimarzio but that´s just me.

By the way. I´ve tried to get just one of the v-trems that are actually used by charvel here through several shops but they seem to be unavailable here. Can you get them in the US?

Thanks 83sandimas....I think it is a great idea for a limited run too.

There was an idea for a limited run Holdsworth here sometime back. But it seemed some people see the Dimarzio Vintage Tremolo is an important part of the Holds worth specs. I agree. It made the Signature Holdsworth a very unique part of the guitar. I guess Allan Holdsworth did not agree with the belief in the early 80s that Brass Tremolos produced better sustain. A 1982 Guitar Player interview with Allan explains his collaboration and view on the build with Grover Jackson. Check it out http://home.no.net/pstornes/ah/press/gp1282.html I know Matt at Matt's Music would be willing to help out with pursuing the build. I'm just trying to find an old Dimarzio Tremolo in hopes that I can place it on a CS guitar built to Holdsworth specs.

Allan has some of the best sound I have heard out of a neck pick up. It is a combination of Allen and quality parts selection. He is clear and bright, but still soft. Brass can be shrill and brittle and does not sweep well in the bridge position. Holdsworth fans know what I mean even if I can not describe it well. His tone is outstanding. I have a few of those trems and they do settle a shrill guitar down. I find no sustain issues with chrome. I have used on maple bodies when brass sounds too brittle.

The only Fender Vintage Trem that fits an existing Charvel is the Fender American Vintage, but your string spacing will be 2-3/16", instead of 2-1/16". The Brass Charvel trem has the same mounting hole spacing as the Fender American Vintage tremolo, except it has the narrow (humbucker)string spacing. The Mexi and other imports have the 2-1/8" or 2-1/16" humbucker string spacing, but a different mounting hole pattern.

Another option, would be to send out the Charvel Brass trem to be Chrome plated. That's what I'd do if one could not be supplied.
