We are talking about the cover, on the back of the guitar, over the tremolo springs. Recessed ones are flush with the body, like all of the control cavity covers. Non-recessed ones are above the body.
My 25th is recessed.
My HRF is not.

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.
