  • EVH Art Series pickup

Does anyone know of a pickup that can approximate the tones of the EVH Art pickup? I've been waiting for someone to sell one of those but ages have gone by. None in the offering.

So is there a pup out there that does a good job of approximating EVH's modern sound? I know it's an overly wound pup, but I haven't heard anything like it on the market.

Also, who makes it? Is it Seymour Duncan? Would it be available on its own brand new?

The EVH Art Series PU is a Fender wound pickup.. I believe that the SD EVH pickup is more based on the early EVH sound. If you want a pickup that is more true to his current sound, try Ebay for pickups guys have pulled out of EBMM EVH/Axis(which were Dimarzios)or Peavey Wolfgangs. I have heard many say they believe the Dimarzio Tone Zone has a similar sound.
Come and get one in the yarbles, if you have any yarbles, you yunick jelly thou!

I use the Duncan in my Tyler, and own a B/W Art Sereis and a EBMM EVH

The Art series pickup is hotter than the Wolfgang pickup which was hotter than the EBMM EVH pickup (which is like a ToneZone) which is way hotter than the Duncan 78/EVH

I just picked up an Art Series humbucker from Ebay. I came across it by chance (I had searched for a long time but no one was selling) and snapped it up. I'm swapping it into my GMW 5150 replica. I'm interested to see how it sounds in an alder body as opposed to basswood.

I have a Duncan Custom Custom in it now, which sounds pretty good actually. I think its probably the best production pup out there for EVH stuff. Has an alnico II magnet like EVH's pups.

The Duncan Custom/Custom is the closest production model you'll get to early VH "brown sound." The Custom chop 78 ("Evenly Voiced Harmonics") pickup was the original pickup designed to be a Van Halen signature pickup. For a variety of reasons, that never panned out.

I have not had the chance to compare the 78 or the Art series pickup from Fender. However, I can compare the Custom/Custom to the Peavey Wolfgang pickups. I much prefered the Custom/Custom for early VH "Brown." The Wolfgang pickup was quite a bit hotter and quite a bit brighter. It was a good pickup for a harder edged rock/metal.

I recently took my Charvel EVH Art Series guitar in for a setup. Upon pickup, the repairman (Fender Authorized) stated that he believes the pickup is a DeMarzio that is made for Fender. He's been repairing/building guitars for 30 years, so this may be the case.

The pickup is wound in the Fender shop, it is not outsourced.

I stand corrected! Thanks for the info. The Art Series specs on the charvel.com site are a little ambiguous then...

                    "Custom wound EVH Humbucking pickup"

the Seymour Duncan pickup is basically a custom wound humbucker named the EVH so I just assumed...

Actually, Seymour stopped calling it the "EVH" a long time ago. Probably out of fear of crossing Ed's lawyers. Officially, that Duncan pickup is called the " '78 model".

IMHO, the '78 and EVH Art pickups are like night and day. Early VH and later VH. Both are cool, but very different. I much preferred the EVH Art.

I just finished installing the Art Series pup in my GMW 5150 and it sounds very nice. It does EVH perfectly, of course, but it's also a very versitile pup. It cleans up superbly by rolling back the volume knob and sounds great for modern hi-gain tones as well. It also sound fantastic through a straight clean channel.

I do have to say though, that overall, I would give a slight edge to the Duncan 78' EVH. It's a little more articulate and clearer sounding than the Art Series; which is to be expected from a lower output pup. You will need a hi-gain amp to play it through though.
