  • CS Russian Sub Review ... .. .

Well, I said what the heck and went and grabbed mine the other day. Here is what I have to report:

Finish is killer. Neck is very nice and the fret dress appears to be top notch. They are still "heavy" (which is relative, but these are not light-weight by any definition - I do not believe that the bodies were re-built). Anyway, the weight issue was never a big deal with me as I prefer heavy guitars.

Certain little things were done properly (tuners, knob placement, no custom shop logo, clean floyd nut install, non-recessed trem, non-loged pups etc.). Also, major plus here, guitar was shipped one month after final set up, not 3-6 months, so it did not need much of a tweek.

And oh yeah, it sounds killer through my Line 6 home rig. I am planning to use it at practice next week so we will see how she sounds through a mesa rig.

Only real negative - the neck pocket is gapped big time on each side like that HRF that recently was a big deal (I am not sure if the thread was killed, but you know what I am talking about). I honestly do not think I would have noticed it quickly if this had not been such a big deal before.

There does appear to be an issue with the neck pup alignment, but these were spec'd as non f-spaced (and I guess there is no such thing as an f-spaced single anyway) and my '86 s-head has exactly the same issue with the location of the front pup so it is not a big deal to me either. Alignment of the bridge hum seems fine to me (not perfect, but it is not f-spaced).

Also, I am very, very greatful to Matt for stepping up and getting the replacement cases and we will leave it at that.

Very cool guitar on the whole and its too bad that this run will forever be tainted. Also, I will say that the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth for reasons we do not need to dredge up at this point. Suffice it to say that I think that fender has gotten the last my money.

    Just being honest.

Pics to follow if people are actually interested (Matt's pics pretty much tell the story, although my trem springs seem correctly located so ???).

Sounds like an awesome guitar. I'd love to have one.

Looking at Matt's pics, I can't see any gap in the neck pocket.

Congrats Man!! Even though this run turned into a somewhat disappointing saga, they are still way cool guitars!!!

I am curious though, you mentioned the weight was still heavy. Did J/C every say if they used the light weight alder that was requested or not?

lame about the neck pocket gap but i hope the guitar serves you well. one thing that i think is weird about them is the logo placement. call me a screw counter (and i've got the graphic for it), but i don't like that the logo doesn't flow with the same angle of the headstock. sticks out like a sore thumb, but hey, it's a visual quirk of mine.

LMFAO! As I said, everything is relative, and why you would want to go in this direction is beyond me, but here is the pre-refin version which was delivered last summer:

Notice the charvel logo placement relative to the tuner washer. That one I sent back. At this point its called cutting your losses

Also, as for the weight issue, I never cared enough to get an official reply.

                    Congrats. Glad you like it.

Sad that this run was such a freakin' fiasco. I can see how it would turn folks off.

Congrats to you sir, I've wanted something like this for a long time and it's good to see you received yours. Enjoy it, my friend-

sully, screw counter or not, you're absolutely right and there's nothing wrong with that.

I thought the logo looked funny as well but I think it is the way it is because of the color, they wanted the black logo to be visable on the orange background not get lost in the black. Should of went with a different color logo ( perhaps white ) and matched it to the headstock shape IMO .

FYI: The origianal was black and somehow they managed to center it normally on that one.
