I wonder if that is true?
Even though most of the 80's stars were seen playing single hums on tour, alot of the songs were recorded on more complex configurations. Even Eddie had a burst and a 355.

Look at DeMartini, you can't nail his all tones without a neck pup.

There's something about a 1-H that draws me. Sorry. It's clean. It's simple. It's bare-bones. Don't get me wrong, I like a H-H and a H-S, but the 1-H is what pulls me. More wood and overall more "tonal real estate" perhaps?

So all you JCFers with 1-Hum J/Cs you want to get rid of, PM me!

There are ways to make a single hum configuration more versatile. Listen to Johnny Winter when he was playing those "Lazer" guitars. His tech came up with something similar to what Bill Lawrence now sells as under the name "Q-Filter" to lower the pickup's resistance. Or inductance. Or reluctance. Or something. I'm not a freakin' electrical engineer here!

I love the single humbucker too. I play metal exclusively (especially 80's) and I have a Charvel Model 2 and Model 1 because they are single humbuckers. I even took both of my Fender Strats and put on new pickguards with only 1 p/u. The cool part is that each of my 4 guitars have a different pickup in it. (EMG 81, EMG 89, Dimarzio Super Dist. & Duncan Screamon Demon) So they all sound a little different and I can play the one that has the sound I'm looking for for the song I want to play.

I can't stand single coils. Especially in the bridge (sorry Strat fans), but what drives me crazy is when I switch to the single coils after playing on the bridge p/u and there is a MAJOR volume drop. If I match the humbucker to the singles to balance out the total sound, the humbuckers are too weak for me to get the "Metal" sound I'm after.

Lots of people like the simplicity of 1 H and 1 vol control. Like someone else said...it's a hotrod.
My Duncan Designed pickups are way better than Seymour Duncan regular pickups you fanboy.

Yeah...too bad the forum doesn't have a minimum IQ.

In general, single hum guitars just look better so if you're building show pieces that's the way to go.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

I gotta have an arsenal of single hum guitars, Single coils don't get me off at all, and even though 2 hums are nice at times, they just aren't visually appealing to me unless they're on a les paul.

i like having more than 1 pickup, but i do have a few 1 hum super strats. they are pretty much one trick ponys, but something about 1hum that just screams METAAALLLLLL!

The Beauty of the Custom Shop is that you can order what you want! However, keep your eyes out, there are some 2 hum runs coming.... BTW, I prefer HH and HSS myself.

If someone's using a multi-fx pedal like the GT8 for example, they have all the sounds their guitar could every make at their disposal. They dont need a neck pup to sound warmer.

One hb is fine for some things and, like Tim said, it's a great layout for show pieces. But I have to have a variety of tones available, especially for my current "gig". A one-HB guitar would be fun to have but I couldn't get by with a single pickup (HB or SC) for very long.
Takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory.

What is that background? A tanning bed?

The EMG-89 makes my KE1 pretty versatile. The new EMG-81TW looks to be pretty cool.

Got to love a single for it's simplicity.
