Yea, the wood really does affect the tone.
I've played a Koa PC1 and I have a Mahogany PC1 with the Super 3 in them and the Koa sounds much more richer and warmer than the Mahogany one.

Rick..so they are super 3s..that does ring a bell. John and his friends like the tone of the SD1 so much. He ordered that pup to put in his old USA basswood dinky, and wasn't happy. His friend hunted a SD-1 down a long time ago...he still has his too.

I remember calling Jackson on the phone for almost a year..they were really cool tho. They gave me my serial # and wrote it down. When I got it..it was that fuggin' number...I remember that!

Yep... every PC1 (production model) ships with a Super 3 in the bridge position.
I personally think the Super 3 sounds like shit in Basswood guitar bodies. Very muddy.
Sounds pretty good in Alder though. I had a Super 3 in my Model 5A, but it was lacking some of the punch I get from my PC1.
I have an SD 59 in the 5A now.
I prefer an SD Custom Custom in Basswood myself.

Rick, thanks for the info! Yes, different/same pups in different woods makes a world of difference.

My SD III has been my main daily player since I bought it in 96....

The birdseye neck and headstock is actually starting to darken some with age, it use to bother me, but now I like the way it's turning. Sort of adds character to the guitar. It is a super heavy guitar but I've NEVER found another guitar that has the tone this thing does. The Chopper in the neck has quit working (you can barely hear it) so it's going into the shop soon to have some electrical work done to it. When I started having trouble with the pickup, I opened the cavity cover to see if I could locate a loose wire or cold solder spot and it looks like a 3 year old wired it. Must have been wired after 4:20 pm on a friday. :ROTF:
Anyway, I've been looking out for one of the KOA bodied SD just so I could try one out..

Horns, I LOVE the looks of your green SDIII. I saw one just like it on ebay about a month ago and I almost bid on it, it was sooooo tempting.

Rob, wow..that's nice..cool seeing that guitar in purple. Yours looks like it aged very nicely too..especially being your main player for 12 years. You're right, both SDs sound like nothing I've played. I think you would love the tone and weight of the SD1 Koa. It has an extremely warm tone but with alot of "bite" that makes pinchs a sinch!!! The SDIII has a much brighter tone..more edge. The Tone Zone gives it alot of punch, especially loud. I like 'em better than my '96 purple Wolfgang (very purdy) and my '96 USA "Floyd Rose Classic" strat (my secondary player) and even my precious RR1!!!

Odd, all my guitars were made in '95/'96..I went nuts then...but I'm glad I did!

My ONLY complaint is the volume knob placement..I still hit the fuggin' thing after 12 years..wtf!!

Haha, I know what you mean, it took me awhile to get use to the volume knob but it does't bother me much now. One of my favorite parts of this guitar is the bypass switch that lets you go directly to the bridge pickup with the volume wide open, but I still haven't quite got the hang of the location of that switch, it's not in a real handy spot. The Charvie is my main player but I'm always careful to take meticulous care of it. That's one reason I started getting upset when the maple started turning, but like I said, I really kinda like the way it's turning now. Best I could tell from researching and reading some of the threads on here, my SD III was made in either late 94 or early 95. I bought it from a guy who bought it brand new for his teenage son only to have it set in his closet until he sold it to me in late 96 so it was virtually new. I am very proud of the fack that it is almost scratch free including no buckle rash on the back. I just had it refretted a few months ago and it actually plays better that it did when it was new. After I saw the green one on ebay and now that I've seen the better pics of yours, I think I want one in green.. I'll have to keep an eye out for one.

This is turning into a fun thread! Nice pics of your axes, guys. Bill, I'm the originator of that SD1 Koa pic. I still have the SD1 and love it. (I still have the afghan it's sitting on, too, though I don't have any strong feelings one way or another about it).

I just bought bsteff666's Music Zoo Charvel San Dimas Natural Series Koa, which should make a nice counterpart to my SD1. I can't wait to compare them.

As to the original thread subject, I love the original Strat head shape and usually don't like bastardized versions of it. I can tolerate the original Charvel quasi-Strat head, like they used on the SD series. I can't stand the later, "pregnant fish" version. It looks repulsive to me.

One of the things that first interested me in Jacksons and Charvels back in the 80s was that they DIDN'T resemble fenders in any way. I hate strats. I hate just about everything about them from the stupid looking headstock to the gaudy pickguard that just about covers the entire body, and Jackson Charvel to me represented an alternative. So when I first saw the SD headstocks, I was a little wary, but the guy I bought it from let me take it home for a couple of days before I made my decision. I took it to band practice than night and was sold. This is not your fathers stratocaster for sure, and the headstock is just different enough that I don't mind it.
