  • Which straplocks will fit '96 Charvel?

I'm awaiting delivery of a '96 Charvel and I want to put straplocks on it. I have no preference for Dunlop or Schaller but I want to use the ones whose screws will fit the existing holes (it has stock strap buttons).

I know the Dunlops will fit on my Ibanezes but I don't know which ones will fit the Charvel.

    Any help is appreciated.

Did you put the Schallers on yourself or did you buy it that way?

I know that my question may seem a bit silly but I don't want to mess with the screws any more than necessary.

you will need to install them yourself. personally, i use the dimarzio clip-lock strap. i put a white one on this custom shop charvel dinky.....

        GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

        and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Of course I'll put them on myself. I have no aversion to actually doing the work itself. I just want to get the straplocks that use screws that will fit the existing holes in the Charvel nice and tight, that's all. As to the Cliplock straps, they're not for me.

I'm not sure if the regular screws will work with Schallers. I know they don't for Dunlops. And Dunlops need the holes to be drilled out for their screws anyway since they're thicker.

Won't for Dunlops. Both use a narrow screw to insure a tight fit. You should not need to drill out the holes though; just screw it in as long as it's more a than a couple mm larger. That's what I did on my import CX.

Try using the original guitar's screws through a Dunlop replacement strap button by filing around the perimeter of the original screw head until you can pull it through down to the base as you're supposed to do with the new screws. A little elbow grease and a metal file worked great for me. No filling or drilling of the hole, snug as a bug in a rug as they say.

That's exactly what I want to avoid. I did that on my Ibanezes but I don't want to that to the Charvel unless I absolutely have to.

+1 What I do for exact fit is to put the original screw in the chuck of a hand drill and use a bench grinder to reduce the diameter of the head so it slips in the body of the button as described above. (Dunlop or Schaller in this case) That way your dead-on! Quick and easy.

This prolly sounds like the absolute gayest of all that is gay..

I never used strap locks in my life. I NEVER dropped a geetar/ bass in 31 years of playing. On the straps where the holes are stretched out from years of wear. I use plastic bread clips from hotdog/hamburger buns..its sounds silly but true. Clip it after the strap and it will stay secured. I've played many shows/practices with very heavy basses..it works! There's an endless supply and you don't notice 'em...well, its an option if ya need one in in a hurry anywhoo.

what can I say, I'm a cheap fuck..but it works!

Doesn't sound gay to me at all.. I use to use strap locks but found over time that they were too much of a pain in the ass to fool with so I stopped using them. I used bread clips for awhile but they got hard to find.. Now I just make sure I have a good strap that fits nice and tight. If the hole gets streched out, I get a new one. Never dropped a guitar once.

ah, cool, i thought maybe you were thinking that either the schaller or the dunlop would work with the factory strap buttons!! we get some weird questions around here!!!

one of the things i like about the dimarzio is that it comes with a couple of different sized screws, but i have always just used the factory screws. it works out well, because if (i rarely sell my guitars) sell one, i can put the factory buttons back on and nothing has changed.

i like the dimarzio strap because i play anywhere from 3-7 different guitars on satge and i don't have to worry about getting the extra space from the strap button caught on anything (the dimarzio is low profile in that regard) when i am making a QUICK change between songs.

plus i can color co-ordinate them nicely!!!

Those bread clips came in a D'Andrea guitar kit I got some years back... it said they could be used as emergency strap locks. I've never used them, as I prefer to use the little red rubber gasket bottle seals from Grolsch beer bottles.

Gotch ya. I was in a hurry when I posted so I was struggling to explain what I wanted.

I hear ya. I just don't like having the strap ends hanging off my guitar when I don't use a strap. To each his own.

Heh, I have a lady out in Vegas make straps for me that match my guitar finishes to some degree. I'll have to post pics to make the point. For example, I had a guitar finished in chili pepper fabric so I sent her some of the fabric to cover one of her straps with. Another guitar I have I had refinished with a neon orange, neon yellow and neon green graphic so I had a bright orange and green velvet strap made for it. Lastly, I'm going to order a tiger stripe strap from her to match the Bengal Charvel that just arrived today.

Anyway, I found a set of Dimarzio straplocks I had in my parts box so I'll try them out and go from there.

Thanks for all the discussion about straplocks.
