MJ is great, but did she work for Jackson or Fender? I believe he's speaking of Abigail Ybarra.

      • Abigail works for Fender. Showed her on Made In America when they did the Fender tour.

Clapton and several other big names will only use pickups wound by her.

ANd MJ wound my 3 Custom Duncans - Distortion Jr, Jazz Jr, and Custom Jr

        • Didn't Abigail work with Jackson back in the '80s, too? I thought I remembered Jim Shine mentioning that.

          • I also remeber something about Abigail working for Jackson in the 80's. Also, somewhere I heard that Fender bought the machines to build pickups from Jackson, in like the late 80's, early 90's, and she went to work for Fender then.

I actually would have preferred a blue San Dimas Style 1 with HSS, but I figure I will never get that variation, so I went ahead and did the So Cal figuring that I could change the pickguard and pickups if the HH doesn't do it for me.

How about a production model of this guitar? ... http://www.themusiczoo.com/Charvel_U...hic_C7800.html

Another thought ... does anyone think the black ones will sell? They are just too plain for my tastes.

And did anyone see this: http://www.themusiczoo.com/charvel/c...ion_series.htm

Abigail Ybarra has worked for Fender since the 1950s.

Abigail did a short tour of duty for Jackson/Charvel.

                  • Was she teaching Jackson folks how to wind pickups?

Nope, never happen. It's a graphic, and probably a dealer exclusive.

You have to remember that these are all hot roddable guitars. If you get a plain black one and keep it bone stock, IMO you've missed the whole point.

I will be getting at least one black one. Hopefully one of the rotation colors for the rear-loaded ones will be natural - I've got an idea I wanna try

I plan on acquiring a plain black SD1 and keeping it bone stock. The specifications are everything I would want in a custom Charvel.

The So-Cal is definitely the more hotroddable versus the non-pickguarded models.

                        • I have a Tangerine Socal on pre order, but have been thinking about ordering a black Socal to swap out the pickguard and go with a H/S/S setup... Something I like. I had thought about doing that on the Tangerine Socal, but I don't know if I want to mess with that one

Good point. I guess the black ones could be basically a blank canvas.

The only hot rodding I've done is to replace pickups or hardware or pickguards.

Some dumb questions on custom graphics ...

                            1. How much does it usually cost for a an artist to paint a custom graphic? Ballpark range?
                            2. How durable are they? I assume there is some sort of clearcoat that goes over them to protect them.

If you're going to get a custom graphic, you might as well get a custom shop Charvel IMO. In the end, you could pay up to $1500.

                              • I had Dan Lawrence do the Adrenalize graphic on my ESP and it cost me right about $1000. Expensive but it was worth every penny.
