  • San Dimas neck or MIJ?

Is this the real thing? Just from the pics in the ad, it just looks like my Charvel Model 4 neck.

I will contact him, but what questions should I ask to see if it is indeed authentic?

Looks OK for what he claims it is: a neck off of a recent reissue pointy. It's going to look quite a bit like a Model Series neck at a quick glance, except it'll have the gold 3-on-a-side USA logo rather than the white pointy import logo, it'll be oil-finished rather than clearcoated, and it'll have a floyd nut. Looks OK on all counts to me. Also, ask him if there is any problem with the clearcoat on the headstock. Bubbles or lifting clearcoat is a plague on these things. See if he'll take a closeup for you.

Get a close up of the back, it should be qtrsawn too if its a usa made neck.

weren't Model Series necks also quartersawn?

Nope. They were flatsawn. If you happen to get one with nicely lined up grain it's luck of the draw.

This thread has some pretty good onfo & pics:

Get a pic of the side to see if it has a thick rosewood board. The USA's are pretty thick.Looks good so far.
            Really? well screw Mark Twain.

They listed the fretboards as qrtsawn and make it read as if the necks were.

Nice neck, but I'm not sure I'd pay $225 for that right now. IMHO, we're going to see quite a bit more of these Charvel USA Standard pointyhead necks for sale soon.

With the USA Production models having stratheads and very affordable prices, there is probably going to be a fair bit of neck swapping going on soon. i.e., Pick up a nice USA Standard with a graphic on the cheap and put a USA Production strathead neck on it - then you've got yourself a "custom" strathead for little money. Then sell the USA Production body with the USA Standard (pointy) neck or just part it all out.

In retrospect, I'm really glad J/C went with the Grover tuners on the USA Production stratheads. It's a nice, easy way to tell the difference from a custom shop strathead neck (which will have Schallers or Gotohs, instead). Hopefully, they'll have an identifying stamp on the USA Production heels or something else to that effect, too.
