  • My new Charvel SoCal is going back

Well, I liked the looks of the Charvel SoCal and nobody around here carried them so I ordered a new one from an online dealer. Just got the guitar today and I am very dissapointed. The setup was god awful, it was unplayable. Strings resting on the neck, floyd at a crazy angle and height. Both pickups were sunk into the body and when I tried to adjust the bridge pickup, I found that the threads on one side of the pickup was stripped out. The front pickup would wobble back and forth adjusting it because the threads were too loose making the pickup sit at an angle unless you took your hand and pressed or pulled it to make it level. The three way switch is a pos, piss poor quality. Soldering was horrible, I was getting an annoying hum from the three way switch until you jiggled it around. Floyd is ok but you can definately tell it's not as good quality as the original. For an american made guitar, I honestly felt ripped off. It seems like Charvel cut way too many corners and feels like a foreign made guitar instead of American made. I purchased a Jackson DK2M that I sent back because of poor qc problems and needless to say this Charvel will be going back for a refund as well. To me, my wolfgang special was way better quality and so is my Ibanez prestige RGA121. Sorry to be a buzzkill, I have read others posts who have purchased their new USA Charvel and love them. I guess I just have bad luck.

What dealer did you buy it from?

Honestly, I would rather not say. He was very apologetic and said that he should have checked the guitar out before shipping it.

I wouldn't blame Charvel because Charvel makes good guitars.
Unfortunately, its the dealers who are at fault for the setup and etc not Charvel.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

That's a bummer,I blame the dealer. My So-Cal is Awesome. It was still in the sealed box / bag.We pulled it out. . just needed to be tuned that's all.Salesman tuned it and handed it to me and played killer,no set-up needed.
I do know what your talking about w/the Floyd's angle. From what i've read they are supposed to be tilted foward so pull back is better. Action was low, doesn't buzz so probably staying there. . .time will tell.
          Good luck and keep Rockin.

Have you thought about using sentences?

Sorry about the Charvel, BTW mine came in with a great setup. I am a picky SOB and couldn't find anyhting to bitch about it. Very playable right out of the box.
My inpesction tag had under setup "CS". Is there someone with CS initials over there or was it set up at the Custom Shop?

            Don't know....

Seems like these are pretty much hit and miss. I put more work that I should have into a brand new $1000 guitar, but in the end Im pretty happy with it. Though I will say that alot of my mid-higher end imports are of better build quality.

I think it's admirable that many dealers take the time and effort to make sure a guitar is "generically" setup for the buyer. Frankly, it should come from the factory in "that" condition. For a thousand bucks, there really should be no issues.

We all have our preferences on final setup and we shouldn't expect a shipped guitar to be "spot on." However, we should not expect to have to fix this, fix that, replace this, replace that in order to have a quality thousand dollar axe.

How long was it hanging on the wall??? Did every 12 y/o EVH wannabe stand in line to "test drive" it before it got sold to you and stuck in a box for shipping????

Sounds strange. Maybe......I guess there's 1 bad one in every bunch.

with the strings resting on the neck and the Floyd at a crazy angle straight out of the box, has a spring popped off the back of the block?

it's odd that you would have these issues AND a brand new set of pickups are badly adjusted and have fucked up pickup bezels already. It's like they put all the bad parts on one guitar.

I blame both the dealer and Charvel. Charvel should not have sent the guitar out in that condition. The tag has set-up, ED and final inspection is a handwritten letter, looks like an E dated 6/13/08. I just don't see how Charvel could pass inspection on the guitar with the pickups sunk into the body, bad switch or soldering connection, strings resting on the frets, etc. Also, like I said earlier, the dealer should have never sent the guitar out. You could just look at the guitar and tell it needed work done to it just to play it. I was surprised by this because he stocks a lot of high end guitars including the San Dimas Charvels, Jacksons, Gretsch, Guild, etc. Like others have said, I didn't expect a "spot on" setup but for a USA made guitar, it should be close or at least in a condition to plug it in and play to check it out. Glad the rest of you are enjoying yours and not experiencing any major problems.

The springs were fine, the spring tension screws needed to be adjusted. I do realize too that the trem sits at a slight angle but the way it came out of the box was like having the bar depressed all the way(ala trem dive bomb). I also agree with you about them putting all the crap parts on my guitar. Working in factories myself, I have seen things like that done before so I know it happens.

there may have been some shipping damage or something..

I got 12 of them, and they were all in great shape. Are they perfect, no. But I am sorry, no man made guitar is gonna be perfect. It should always need to be tweaked, and should be. I am sorry, but You should NEVER have recieved that guitar. I played every one before it left the shop. there was a Black SD2.... I checked them both out, one was right just needing Mikes personal setup touched, it shipped, the other needed a little TLC, so it sat on the bench, till it was right. Now it is, but its hangin on the wall. But I would have never shipped it without making it right.
now am I saying that these guitar was out the box perfect from my store, no. But they were checked out.
Not that I am gonna ramble.
and you would be suprised at what shipping can do to a guitar, when FedEx delivered them, 5 of them were open..
