  • What was the 1st song you played on your new SD/SoCal?

"Journey to the Center of Eternity" for me. Then, "Your Song" by Elton John. I installed a push pull volume pot to tap the TB-4, sounds great for cleans especially when coupled with the neck hum full on.

I played whatever the guitar had in it.

It's long been my (somewhat nutso) belief that guitars have "built-in" songs, and we as players serve as conduits through which those songs are passed into the world. Some guitars have nothing in them, whether due to damage or age, or just because they were "born without a soul", while others can only be "translated" by a certain player, and still others contain volumes of songs of many different types. These last ones call out to be passed from person to person so their entire catalog can be brought into the world by many different players.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

However, I did play along to some Iron Maiden, and for the first time in my life, I nailed Dave Murray's tones from Number, Piece, and Powerslave

Those DiMarzios in the SoCal are so integral to getting that tone. My SLS with EMG 81s couldn't do it, and my dozen-other Jacksons with various Duncans couldn't do it. It HAS to be DiMarzios and maple.

yeah some guitars do have that mojo that makes you come up with new stuff right off.
the SDS1 i bought must have had eruption in it already since i have never played it better

In a related story, I had always wanted a Gibson Hummingbird (huge Jimmy Page/Led Zep fan ) and finally found one in a shop for $650 a few years ago.

Sounded like ass. The guy at the shop informed me it had been extensively repaired after having been through a long, hard life making music. It was dead. New strings, new frets, flawless neck repair, and played smooth as glass, but it was uninspiring and had nothing in it. Maybe I just wasn't the right man for the job, but it wasn't worth $650 to me.

My $250 LaPatrie Classical, on the other hand, is loaded with stuff, as was my $300 Takamine G330S when I bought it, and the $60 Gretsch Dorado that has action so high it can only be used for slide. I've had that one for over 10 years now and it gets tossed around like a ragdoll, but still sounds like it's busting out of jail every time I pick it up.

                            these threads are funny.

mine was Bitch at band practice last night, the guitar was a lot of fun to play and I used it the entire rehearsal.

and it will be my main guitar at our show tonight
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives
