Such a tease you are. I actually think the Tele looks cool/different with the strat headstock. I still wouldn't buy one ... but to me it somehow gives more of a hot-rodded look to it. That said I think the main reason Charvel used the strat headstock on it is to keep costs down by using the same neck on all three.

I'm probably in the minority here but I think the Tele body is one of the ugliest ever made and its headstock is just as bad. In fact, I see the the Strat headstock as an improvement on the SD2 compared to a Fender Tele Anyway, I will eventually pick up one of the new Charvies but I'll just wait till more colors are out then buy new or simply get a used one in one of the former colors by then I really like the idea of the Tone Zone in the bridge too!

not as much as the ballsack hs on those mid-90's Charvels and the new GMWs.

the Tele hs looks right on the Tele body. it just works.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

I like the strat headstock on the tele. On a separate item, everyone could easily predict the strat Charvels would outsell tele Charvels. The Charvel crowd is much more focused on strats, independant on which headstock was on the tele. I think they should alternate quarters with tele's and stars.

Also I'll be excited to find out the third color. A pearl white would be an eye catcher.

I know I would have bought one if it had a tele hs. Not sure what they are thinking cause a strat hs just looks stupid on a tele.
Totally disagree. For us few Tele fans around here, the Strat head is a welcome and exciting change. I've never had a chance to buy a Charvel Tele with a Floyd and a Strat head until now. And yes I think they would also have looked great with a traditional Tele headstock as well, I would have bought one either way.

I think it is fine that there are radically different opinions on this, but I like the fact that they decided to make at least one of the Production models something new/unique....and I sure hope the next Tele is available in blue or green!!!

Charvel has to pay a licensing fee to use the Strat headstock. FMIC didn't give it to them. Same with Warmoth, Allparts, etc.

That licensing fee has to come out of Charvel's annual budget. However, once they pay it, they can use it on more than one model, thus increasing their chances of a sale/profit.

With a Tele headstock, it only "works" on one body style - a Tele - yet the licensing fee costs the same as a Strat.

Since they only have one Tele-style model to put it on, their chance of making a profit/sale compared to the Strat-style is halved, and therefore not worth the risk.

Plus, when most people see a Tele headstock, regardless of the logo, they expect a certain neck profile and nut width. Most people are used to Stratheads of various brandings and neck profiles and nut widths, but not so much Teles, so it's a harder sale.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

The way I prefer a Tele is with Charvel/Jackson pointy headstock... It looks so much more metal that way... yeah a metal tele, pretty cool in my book.

Charvel has recently built custom shop teles with the tele headstock.

                            Like these:

So wouldn't that mean that the licensing fee has already been paid?

Unless they are on a per-item basis, where they pay for 10 licenses and build 10 Custom Shops.

The risk of not being able to sell 150 Charvel USA SD2s with a Tele head is relatively minor, but when you factor in the hundreds more Black ones they have to sell, it becomes a problem. The predominant Tele market wants it to look exactly like a Fender - no flashy paint, traditional bridge, singles, etc etc. The "rock-n-roll-Tele" market is actually very small, which is why Fender doesn't have one.

                              That should be pretty obvious.
