  • Where to send SoCal neck to get clearcoated?

Im really not bonding with the Tangerine SoCal... mainly because Im one of the few that prefers painted necks. Rather than take a $200+ loss selling the guitar, Ive decided to have the neck and board clearcoated. Im thinking poly with a slight vintage tint. Any suggestions?

First try rubbing on a coat or two of lemon oil, followed by rubbing down with #0000 steel wool, and repeat a second time. This gives a perfect polished feel.

just go to stew mac and order a can of clear coat spray and DIY
I have sprayed many necks with great results
the hardest part is masking the fret tops
If it's not a CHARVEL then i dont want to play it,look at it or even fuckin THINK about it!

Id gladly do it myself, but every time Ive used rattle can anything it NEVER hardens all the way. I hang my guitars up, and the one neck I did with rattle can clear never hardened and would stick to the hanger, ripping the clear off the neck.

Tru Oil is what you want. Not only will it give you a hard finish that you can polish slick, but you can apply it yourself with no mistakes. This is the same finished used on the EBMM guitars, and most independent builders.

I remove the poly finish on my necks and refinish them with Tru Oil.

Thats for the suggestion, but Im pretty set on a poly finish... its just what I prefer in terms of feel and durability. Just looking for suggestions on where to send it.

MinWax Wipe-On Poly is extremely easy to apply, works great and comes in gloss or satin. I've used it on necks (the satin version) and liked it a lot. I would recommend you give it a try.

                Rob,
I'd contact Paul at Bighead www.bigheadguitars.com (he's in PA) and is close to you and see what his schedule is. Paul is usually somewhat slow, so I would contact Marty Bell, www.martybellfinishing.com. He's the quickest on the planet and does very fine quality work. Marty is in Orange Co. California. I prefer Marty as his communication skills are very good as well.

Of course, I can leave out our very own Mike Learn as well!

rsguitarworks.net They can do it poly or nitro with the right touch of amber.
I never taped the frets off just scraped the frets clean with a razor
                    Really? well screw Mark Twain.

Thanks bro, just what I was looking for!!

Ive heard alot of good things about both places, but I really dont want the guitar to be apart for a long time. Marty seems to be the right choice for me, great price and his turnaround time is just what Im looking for, though I have emailed a few other people as well. So far noone has gotten back to me yet but its only been a day.

Stray, thanks for the suggestion, but RSguitarworks price is more than twice what Marty charges to paint an unfinished neck... for $225, Ill buy a spray gun and some paint and shoot it myself for that much.

Thanks for that as well, I never thought of that. Im going to give it a try on some of my other necks for sure, I have a couple that I want finished but not really worth sending out. The SoCal on the other hand, I want done professionally.

Marty has two of my guitars with him now. I have done several custom paint jobs, but these are the first I have done with Marty. While I can't personally comment on his work just yet, I can say he came highly recommended.
